💥 THE FIFTH COMPLETED SPECIAL ISSUE OF EMD 🔔 Baby Hip Sonography Worldwide: Experience, Results, and Recommendations 9️⃣ NINE articles were published in the issue. Let’s explore them: https://lnkd.in/g_bsY5HN 👨⚕️ Guest editor: Prof. Reinhard Graf, Academic hospital Stolzalpe, Austria “We started in 1978 with the research to check whether it is possible to use sonography to detect DDH or not. The first publication was 1980 and everybody was laughing about and could not believe. Because DDH is still the most common "congenital" disease in the locomotor system, baby hip sonography had spread in a special technique worldwide. We had learned to use hip sonography in newborns, to identify the pathology in the joints and to improve the treatment. Because of the possible earliest diagnose hip sonography can prevent catastrophes, or "prevention is better than operation". This special issue gives authors from different countries the first time the chance to present their examination results, experience and recommendations from their country, e.g. General or local screening? Training system? Acceptation in the common health system? etc.”

📢 A commentary Published Online ❓ Should all people starting urate-lowering therapy for gout receive anti-inflammatory prophylaxis? ✒ Authors: Edward Roddy, James A. Prior, Christian D. Mallen 💡 In this commentary, the authors advocate a personalised approach between people with gout and clinicians to reach shared treatment decisions when discussing the possibility of co-prescribing prophylaxis, which explores their views about prophylaxis, makes them fully aware of its benefits and risks (including those of different therapeutic options for prophylaxis), the alternatives to it (the ‘pill in the pocket’ approach), and what they should do in the event of a flare (including not stopping ULT), and provides them with a prescription for flare treatment that they can take as soon as a flare occurs. This approach not only provides a safety net for patients should a flare occur but also empowers them to make decisions about their care. ⭐ Keywords: #Gout, #urate-lowering therapy, #colchicine 🔗 Read the full article: https://lnkd.in/g5N99faZ 📑 PDF: https://lnkd.in/gkvYEUMK 🔎 This article belongs to our special issue “Pharmacological and Non-Pharmacological Management of Gout”, edited by Prof. George Nuki. 🔔 ORIGINAL ARTICLE PUBLISHED ONLINE 📚 Evaluation of continued 2-monthly or annual urate monitoring in gout: an extension of the GoutSMART randomised controlled feasibility trial ✒ Authors: Philip L. Riches, Debbie Alexander, Clare Brown, Hawazin Abbas, Rowan Hart, Amrey Krause ⭐ Keywords: #Gout, urate monitoring, self-management, treat-to-target, point-of-care ✅ The article aimed to improve outcomes for patients with gout are associated with reduced urate levels and many guidelines recommend regular urate monitoring. There is no consensus on how frequently monitoring should be performed, and so the authors have used a supported self-management approach which incorporates urate self-testing to evaluate 2-monthly urate monitoring compared to annual monitoring. 🔗 Read the full article: https://lnkd.in/gYaF-Zgy 📑 PDF: https://lnkd.in/gkmTzbg2 🔎 This article belongs to our special issue “Pharmacological and Non-Pharmacological Management of Gout”, edited by Prof. George Nuki. 🔔 A Mini Review Published Online ❓ Can Janus kinase inhibitors be used to treat immune checkpoint inhibitor associated adverse events? ✒ Authors: Jürgen Braun, Kirsten Karberg ☑ Immune checkpoint inhibitors (#ICI) such as cytotoxic T-lymphocyte associated protein-4 (#CTLA-4), programmed cell death-1 (PD-1), programmed death ligand-1 (PD-L1), and lymphocyte activation gene-3 (LAG-3) are increasingly used to treat cancer patients since they were shown to reduce tumor progression and increase survival of patients with different types of cancer. However, ICI may also affect self-tolerance and lead to immune-related adverse events (irAEs) which are not very frequent but can present in almost all organ systems including joints, tendons, and muscles. Indeed, arthritis and myositis are among the most frequent irAEs. Glucocorticoids, immunosuppressants, and biologics are used to treat affected patients. This commentary deals with the question of whether Janus kinase inhibitors could be an option in this clinical situation. ⭐ Keywords: #ImmuneCheckpointInhibitors, #immune-related adverse events, #Janus kinase inhibitors, #cancer, #arthritis, #myositis 🔗 Read the full article: https://lnkd.in/g42gGhmd 📑 PDF: https://lnkd.in/gBqmV8Xe

📢 New Review Published Online 📚 The impact of social media and online communities of practice in rheumatology ✒ Authors: Judy L. Seraphine, Alvin F. Wells 💡 The COVID-19 pandemic changed healthcare practices and social media played a significant role in those changes. While social media and online practice communities allow collaboration and engagement, education and knowledge dissemination, research and publication, promotion, and the potential for improved clinical care, their use also involves perils and pitfalls. The literature suggests that rheumatologists use innovative social media platforms for both professional and social purposes. Similarly, many patients with rheumatic disease use social media for education and communication. This review outlined the background of social media platforms, the reasons for their use, and associated risks. This review further discussed the need to better understand the benefits of social media and online communities as well as the potential negative effects that could impact the practice of rheumatology. ⭐ Keywords: Social media, virtual communities of practice, rheumatology, COVID-19, ethico-legal, free open-access medical education 🔗 Read the full article: https://lnkd.in/gxt9-QXn 📑 PDF: https://lnkd.in/gu6KivRx 🔎 The special issue belongs to our special issue “Digital health technologies in rheumatology: emerging evidence and innovation”, edited by Prof. Rebecca Grainger.
