  • 🎉 Article reading day! 📄 Title: Long-term efficacy of mepolizumab on eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis: a retrospective study 🔖 Eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA) is a vasculitis characterized by eosinophilic inflammation. Patients with EGPA are treated with systemic glucocorticoids and immunosuppressive drugs to induce and maintain remission. However, most patients relapse after tapering glucocorticoids, and there are refractory cases with inadequate response to glucocorticoids. Mepolizumab, a humanized anti-IL-5 antibody, is approved for relapsing or refractory EGPA. Furthermore, recent studies have reported the efficacy of benralizumab, a humanized anti-IL-5 receptor α antibody, in EGPA. Here, we investigate the efficacy of biologics on consecutive cases of EGPA. 🔗Check more details at https://lnkd.in/gKesVDuQ #Asthma #benralizumab #biologicagent #eosinophilicgranulomatosiswithpolyangiitis #glucocorticoid #mepolizumab

  • 🌞 Check the new Special Issue! 🎊 "The Era of Biologics in Allergy", Led by Prof. Giovanni Paoletti 🧬 6 published articles can be found at https://lnkd.in/gqcNt64D In recent decades the therapeutic approach towards severe allergic and immunological diseases has changed a lot. The previous vision of treating all patients with a single molecule has modified, giving more and more space to a precision medicine approach. To do this, the concept of phenotype and endotype has been developed in order to identify clinical characteristics and molecular mechanisms that do not work properly, in order to act in a tailor-made way on them. This Special Issue will deal with various aspects related to the application of biological drugs in a vast number of allergo-immunological pathologies in which they are currently used. #Biologicaldrugs #precisionmedicine #newtherapeuticalapproach

  • 🎉 Read a new review on Monday! 📄 Title: A mini-update on chronic rhinosinusitis 🔗https://lnkd.in/gHD3M5eh 🔖 Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is an inflammatory disorder of the paranasal sinuses and the nasal cavity lasting longer than 12 weeks. This disease is a common clinical syndrome with significant monetary burden due to the high costs of medical visits, diagnostic tests, medications, and surgical therapies. CRS without nasal polyposis (CRSsNP) is the most common subtype of CRS, accounting for about 70% of all patients. Other subtypes include CRS with nasal polyposis (CRSwNP) and allergic fungal rhinosinusitis (AFRS). CRSwNP has the worldwide prevalence of 2% to 4% and is often accompanied by type 2 inflammation and asthma as a comorbid condition. Pediatric chronic sinusitis is distinct from adult chronic sinusitis and is currently considered an infectious process, characterized by persistent inflammation representing an exaggerated immune response to an external stimulus. #Chronicrhinosinusitis #CRS #Tcells #endotype #phenotype #nasalpolyposis

  • 🎉 Read a new article on Monday! 📄 Title: Eosinophilic inflammation in bronchiectasis: a wide-open field for future research 🔗https://lnkd.in/gTSbzTis 🔖 Bronchiectasis is a heterogeneous chronic lung disease, characterised by irreversible dilatation of the airways and attributed to a wide spectrum of other underlying conditions, usually underdiagnosed and inadequately treated with a high burden for both the patients and the healthcare system. The way bronchiectasis is viewed by physicians has drastically changed over the last decades, with the topic of eosinophilia in the context of the disease being one of the substantially highlighted. Eosinophilia was traditionally considered as a means for distinguishing bronchiectasis from asthma, whereas bronchiectasis was primarily associated with neutrophilic inflammation. However, eosinophilic bronchiectasis is nowadays identified as a distinct disease endotype and is associated with a specific clinical course and response to treatment. #Bronchiectasis #eosinophil #eosinophilicinflammation

  • 🗣️ Discuss the special issue "Beyond Eosinophilic Gastrointestinal Diseases: Pathogenetic Mechanisms and Therapeutic Strategies" https://lnkd.in/gzi5R_y9 👏 Guest editor: Dr. Eleonora Nucera 🔖 In recent years, eosinophilic gastrointestinal diseases (EGIDs), such as EoE, EoG, EoN, EoC, and systemic eosinophilic diseases with gastrointestinal involvement, such as HES and EGPA have received increasing interest from clinicians. The hallmark of these disorders in an inappropriate immune response, often leading to inflammation and tissue damage in affected organs. While eosinophils typically play a role in the defense against parasites and in allergic reactions, their overactivity or misregulation can contribute to the development of eosinophilic diseases. The exact etiology of these conditions remains elusive, but genetic factors, environmental triggers, T2-immune dysregulation and allergic response certainly play a key role. This has led to a greater understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying these diseases and the development of targeted therapies; in particular, the advent of biological drugs capable of interfering with intracellular signaling pathways has significantly altered the course of these diseases, significantly improving the quality of life of patients suffering from these pathologies. ❣️ Call for papers! #EGIDs #EoE #EoG #EoN #EoC #HES #EGPA #eosinophilia #biologic

  • 🎈 Check out a Special Issue on Thursday (6 published articles)! 👉 Topic: The Different Faces of Food Allergy 👉 Guest Editor: Prof. Ingrid Terreehorst https://lnkd.in/ge_GBKPr Allergic asthma and rhinitis are together with atopic eczema the most prominent atopic diseases which can have a severe impact on quality of life. The role of food as a therapeutic measure is gaining importance. Several studies show that certain diet factors can decrease the degree of allergy and inflammation, both in animals and humans. Furthermore, the maternal diet can possibly influence allergy and asthma in the offspring. Lastly, reducing the body mass index alone is enough to diminish asthma symptoms. In the clinic however, this subject does not always get attention. Another problem is that although many patients with the aforementioned atopic diseases would like to optimize their diet in order to diminish allergic symptoms and inflammation, they are unable to to so since they also suffer from food allergy. This can be IgE mediated but eosinophilic esophagitis and other eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders can also influence the possibilities of maintaining an optimal diet. Furthermore, it can have a major impact on mental well-being and social life. In this special issue we address the influence of diet on asthma and allergic inflammation and the approach of the patient with asthma and IgE mediated food allergies, eosinophilic esophagitis or both.
