As evidenced by the dynamics of the presidential election, women continue to be held to a different, much stricter standard than men. In my book "WOKE: A Cultural Competence Guide for Communicators, I delve into why and how women continue to struggle for equality and representation. "Women’s quest for equality is the longest-running struggle in the history of the world. Men have ruled over humanity for millennia, and nowhere has their dominance been more pronounced than over the lives and bodies of women. Although women have made great strides toward equality in the last few decades, they continue to be held to a different standard than men, and society holds many unconscious and deeply rooted biases against them. Today I, the maternal unit to a dual masculine birth, announced that in order to mesh proactive deliverables and evolve interactive channels, best-in-class value-added Mexican style sustenance for integrated cross-family enterprise nutritional infrastructure was immediately available. There is no reason to write corporate material in a language no one can understand because that’s what’s always been done before. Try something new. Don’t so many companies claim to offer “innovative” solutions? Why not be innovative in how we communicate? The above is about as clear as if I’d posted the thought in ASCII characters. Or about as well-received as the actual event of heating up taquitos for my twin teenagers as part of an effort to reintegrate them into the human world after 18 hours of sleep… (NB: Taquitos were devoured; teenagers still not interacting with parental figures.)

Erin here, back again with a Real Chemistry readout of the health policy discussion few are talking about from last night’s VP debate with Leslie Isenegger, MPP.   Over an hour into the debate, Senator JD Vance and Governor Tim Walz were asked about the cost of healthcare. The back and forth mostly focused on who has done more to strengthen the Affordable Care Act (Vance seemingly countering efforts by the Trump administration to weaken the law). But Vance echoed Trump’s vow to repeal the ACA and touted pre-ACA high risk pools, which led to a sharp rebuke from Walz.     On drug pricing, it’s no surprise that Gov. Walz highlighted the Medicare Drug Price Negotiation Program as key to VP Harris’s efforts to bring down costs. Vance claimed the average increase in drug prices under the Trump administration was 1.5% compared to a 7% increase under the Biden administration.     Vance appeared to be citing a HHS report tracking drug prices from 2017-2023. He may have conflated a 7% average price increase on single source drugs from 2022-2023, which was due to price increases on higher priced drugs, with a different statistic that showed 1.6% increase in the consumer price index from 2017-2018. Interestingly, neither candidate mentioned the $35 insulin cap despite both candidates taking credit for that measure.      This debate demonstrated that both candidates would plan to make drug prices a priority of their administrations, despite reports that Congressional Republicans are targeting Medicare price negotiation as a target for repeal in 2025.   https://lnkd.in/dHssXaPe

Cognitive Inflexibility. Good read! Of #information, #knowledge and #communication - "a common mistake in conversations is focusing on what people claim to know as opposed to how they came to know it. Focusing on how we know what we claim to know—that is, our reasoning process—rather than what we believe, can be more constructive and generative of mutual understanding." Of beliefs and habits - "it can take between 18 to 254 days to form a new, simple habit. Beliefs and philosophies can take even longer. Instead of seeking short-term change, consider what the long-term outcome is and consider what single steps can be taken." Does a sense of purpose kindle our passion, or is it our passion that shapes our purpose? Do you know whats your passion, whats your purpose? What drives your professional decisions - passion, purpose, vlaues or rewards? I have been battling this question, akin to the classic ‘chicken or egg’ conundrum, for a while now. I wont lie - I am envious of people who have found the holy grail where passion, purpose & values converge. For the rest of us its a never ending quest. I often wonder - what was their journey? How did they reach there? Do they change their course if passion dwindles? What role does external motivation play? Hit me up with recommendations (if any) that will help me resolve this mystery - anything works - books / blogs / podcasts...... Signing off with a few lines that have stayed with me: purpose is like the warmth and glow from a fireplace - it lifts your mood, makes the world more agreeable and brings a smile. passion is the raging fire, it can make you bask in the warmth but can also burn.

Great communications is both internal and external. Internal comms eliminates internal silos. External comms, to quote Sandy, reinforces to all stakeholders "that we are all working toward the same goal." Back-end accountants and front-line salespeople need to respect and strengthen each other. Investors should understand what customers want. And customers need to understand senior executives' vision. The CCO makes it all happen. It's a huge job, and greater respect for the position is a massive step in the right direction. Jeremy, Stephanie, Jeff - this reminded me of the conversation we had on Jeremy's post a couple of months back. PRWeek's great 2024 Business Report highlights the key challenge facing our industry. Communications is more important than ever. Comms and policy leaders are being asked to play far larger roles as business partners supporting ever more stakeholders. So why did the industry suffer so much in 2023 after many years of growth? As an sector, we are not adapting fast enough to the needs. Organizations are desperate for help but also under tremendous financial strain. They now need both senior level counsel and advisory support as well as deep domain expertise to actually produce. By and large, our industry is still split by this chasm - between strategic and tactical. Clients cannot afford to separate these, either in time or money.
