Did you know that 29% of Canadians have grown their own produce over the last year? 🍅🥬 Or that 63% of Canadians would prefer to buy local or Canadian-made products if price and quality were the same? Meanwhile, 15% of Canadians are willing to spend more on locally made products. It's also great to see that, over the last year, 23% of Canadians have changed their shopping behavior and are making a conscious effort to buy more sustainable products. 🛍️ However, it's concerning that 84% of Canadians are confused or unaware of organizations that contribute to sustainability/environment by making major changes to their businesses. 🤔 Let's all do our part to make a positive impact on the environment today and every day. 75% of non-alcoholic beverage consumers in Canada also purchase alcoholic products. Brands should keep in mind that non-alcoholic beverages are not necessarily replacing alcoholic products, but consumers are integrating them into a balanced lifestyle. It’s happening here, ahead of schedule The Ontario Government’s decision to move up the timeline for selling beer, wine, cider, and ready-to-drink cocktails in convenience stores represents both opportunities and challenges for the market. On the opportunity side, convenience stores across the province are eager to tap into this new revenue stream. Retail consultant Bruce Winder notes in today's Toronto Star that while there will be a premium on prices due to limited shelf space, the added convenience for consumers could drive demand. However, retail analyst Stephen Beaumont suggests that selection may be limited, similar to Quebec’s depanneurs, focusing on top-selling products rather than high-end brands. Despite the enthusiasm, there are significant challenges. The new recycling requirements for grocery stores, which necessitate on-site bottle and can returns, could deter some grocers from continuing to sell alcohol due to the cost and logistical complexities involved. The Retail Council of Canada of Canada and the Canadian Federation of Independent Grocers Grocers have both expressed concerns about the investment needed for recycling infrastructure and the risk of food contamination from returned containers. The $225 million cost to taxpayers for implementing this policy ahead of what is likely a provincial election is a hefty price tag. Given the political timing, it wouldn't be surprising if the move is eventually promoted as part of the government’s “It’s happening here” advertising campaign, positioning it as a win for consumer choice and convenience just before voters head to the polls.

Exciting findings have emerged regarding changes in spending on food, beverages, and alcohol expected over the next year. The survey, spanning 17 international markets, revealed significant insights, particularly in Canada. Notably, 27% of Canadians plan to reduce spending on Food & Beverages, ranking fourth highest among the surveyed markets. Additionally, 3 out of 10 Canadians intend to cut back on alcohol expenditures. These results prompt important considerations for brands and retailers. Will there be tradeoffs among brands, SKU sizes, or private labels? Understanding consumer preferences across categories is key. While transactional data can inform demand changes through pricing models, consumer perception, especially regarding pricing by pack size, is critical. EMARKETER’s Canada Digital Ad Spending 2024 has published, our annual report that details forecasts for advertising across formats including #digital display, #search, #mobile, and #traditional media. It also covers the media types that are driving growth overall, namely #retailmedia and #connectedTV (CTV). Mobile now makes up more than half all ad spending, and digital (which includes mobile) accounts for almost three-quarters of the total. Some key questions answered in the report include: 1.     What emerging channels are driving Canada’s ad market? 2.     Which companies are claiming the most ad revenue? 3.     How will retail media shift dollars from other channels? 4.     How does CTV contribute to the total TV ad market?
