Finding the next Jimmy Pattison. Canadians need to celebrate, champion and cherish their entrepreneurs. Our dreamers, the ones who do, who believe their destiny is a matter of choice and not chance. Today, 65 years ago, Jim Pattison bought his first car dealership after taking a loan from the RBC. He parlayed that risk into an empire with over $16 billion in sales and employs over 50,000 people. At age 95, he still roars with energy and intuition. If I ran this country, I would 'Find the next ten Jimmys. ' Canada would dramatically favour Canadian entrepreneurs over multinationals that auction off their branch plants for billions of dollars in taxpayer-funded and taxpayer-borrowed incentives. Canada would be setting entrepreneurs up for success with a first-mover advantage in terms of cutting red tape, securing their IP, finding investment capital, giving them access to great Canadian thinkers, and creating a tax environment that rewarded them for growing their business, growing our economy, and creating purposeful and high-paying jobs. This picture of Mr. Pattison and me is from 2019 when I used to host and speak at Canadian Grocer's Thought Leadership Day. At this event, Jimmy Pattison was in town to honour Darrell Jones, the President of Save-On-Foods, one of the many companies that he owns. Most people in their nineties find it a big road trip. This is not the case for Jim Pattison, who values exceptional leadership and loyalty and inspires a culture of saying what you mean and doing what you say. So that is Jimmy, and I believe there is a bit, and often a lot of Jimmy in every entrepreneur who chases purpose and profit. So let’s unleash that spirit. I recently watched a clip from Dragon’s Den Canada, where the millionaire judges refused to invest in someone’s business simply because he worked a 9-to-5 job while building his business. As someone who works a second-shift job while building her business during the day (and often at night), I couldn’t help but call BS. The entrepreneur lives in Toronto, one of the most expensive cities to live in, and has young kids to support. When he explained that he couldn’t afford to quit his job and risk not providing for his family, one of the millionaires chimed in: “I quit my job and went all in.” But in what economy? Certainly not this one. Here’s the takeaway: On your entrepreneurial journey, do what’s right for you, not what worked for someone else. This doesn’t mean you can’t learn from those ahead of you. You absolutely should. But create a strategy that fits your circumstances and be ready to adjust as needed. Success is personal, and there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. #entrepreneurship

March month endings have always been exciting for me, not only from our business point of view but from what I get to hear from so many entrepreneurs.. Over optimistic Vendors (sometimes backed by their Accountants) can lead to businesses being overpriced when going to market, which is in my opinion the main reason a business does not sell, and can then go 'stale' in the market. Obtaining a realistic appraisal of value backed by recent market data is critical in the sales process. I had to cancel a trip to Canada that I was really looking forward to, just to focus on my business. My brother moved there a few years ago, and between our busy schedules and the time difference, we’ve hardly been able to talk. So this year, I finally decided to visit him. I literally had my flights booked 6 months in advance because I was so excited to meet him. But as I got closer to the date, I started having seconds thoughts. Here’s the thing - my team and I had been working hard towards our annual goal of reaching 200 million views in 2024. We’re on track now, in the final push to hit the target, and I couldn’t not be here with my team to work towards it. So I cancelled my trip - because I realised that my business needed me more than ever. People often see entrepreneurship as the ultimate freedom - working whenever you want, travelling whenever you feel like it, living on your own terms. But the truth is, while you can have that freedom, a good entrepreneur knows deep down that sometimes it’s not the best option for the business. If you’re truly committed to your work, it will control certain aspects of your life. You still have the freedom to make the choice, but sometimes prioritising your business is the obvious one. I had to say sorry like a hundred times to my brother, but I’ll make it up to him next year. For now - my heart is with my team - and we’re going to smash our targets together.
