In 2023, the global soft drinks industry experienced slower volume growth due to record increases in selling price. However, retail value grew by 5% in fixed constant dollar terms. North America and Western Europe faced flat or slightly negative volume performance in key categories such as sparkling, juice, and bottled water. The story in 2024 and beyond is the rise of Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa as the engine of volume consumption in the global drinks market. Social media and digital marketing campaigns will play a central role in beverage innovation, and co-branded RTDs and functional drinks are areas to watch. Alcohol, particularly flavoured ready-to-drink canned cocktails, will remain a focal point for soft drink producers. Energy drinks, sports drinks, and other functional options are consistent standouts across regions. #softdrinks #beverageindustry

I recently came across an interesting insight: consumer preferences are shifting toward healthier, more mindful drinking habits. According to NielsenIQ, 48% of consumers in 2023 prioritized health, driving demand for functional beverages that support their goals. Consequently, the non-alcoholic beverage market is expected to grow to $1.6 trillion by 2028. This trend brings exciting opportunities but also challenges for the spirits industry. I think, to adapt, alcoholic beverage companies can focus on two key areas: 1) Non-alcoholic alternatives: For example, Diageo introduced options like Seedlip, the first distilled non-alcoholic spirit, Guinness 0.0, and other non-alc. options to meet the growing demand for mindful drinking. 2) Responsible drinking campaigns: Encouraging moderation and helping consumers make informed choices is more important than ever. The shift toward mindful drinking is changing the industry, but it’s also opening up new possibilities.

2moThanks for sharing this Michael Elam-Rye. It's fantastic to see the raise of quality non- and low-alcoholic beers and wines. Shame that some bars and pubs still only have 1 or 2 mainstream options. Consumers are so much more aware these days and want to do the right thing (i.e. drink responsibly).
