What distinguishes coaching from other problem-solving conversations? A coach will explore what you want to change? Help you describe your Why? Discern your current perspective? Identify assumptions and beliefs limiting your thought process, and the perceived problems you want to resolve. Involving clients in the conversation, rather than repeatedly telling them what to do, creates a safe and genuine environment for providing feedback and reflection. My approach to feedback starts with engaging the client in a conversation rather than diving straight in. I begin by asking the client to assess their own performance and relate it to their desired outcomes. This should be an interactive discussion. Interactions with clients should feel authentic and show that you care.

This time, we are going to focus on bad behaviour at work: ❓ Why it happens? ❓ Why are we sometimes oblivious to our impact on others? ❓ What can we do about it? We'd love to share some of your stories about toxic behaviours that you have experienced so please either DM us or comment below if you would like to share. We will of course ensure stories are anonymous if you want them to be. As an example of the kind of stories that we want to unpick....in my very early career, I spent ages photocopying a huge report only to be told that the staples were the wrong angle in the corner of the document and that I would have to start again. And then, the person who I had done the work for threw all the pages on the floor and jumped up and down on them! Interestingly, when I created the image for this post, AI also included lots of paper being thrown about in the form of paper aeroplanes...I've never experienced that at work but I'm sure someone has. Proud to be #18 of 18 tips to help coaching clients stay accountable for making progress. My suggestion: -- Position accountability as a reward. When you can view accountability as a reward rather than a punishment, you'll have a greater sense of ownership and you'll pay more attention to your outcomes. Plus, when you make progress and acknowledge yourself, you'll get a hit of dopamine—the feel-good hormone—which will make you want to continue to work toward your goals. And you'll continue to grow and develop. This tip is backed by neuroscience along my own experience working with my accountability partner Diana Del Bel Belluz. “Andy, Do you think coaching could help me?” asked an executive I was having a casual conversation with following my presentation. I replied, “It's hard to know for sure upfront. Coaching will only work if you are coachable and you have gotta want to be better and be willing to do the work to make changes that create your growth.” He assured me he met the criteria, and we decided to try working together.
