Meet CanU alum, Divya Sharma. Divya is a dedicated leader and advocate for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), with a wide range of professional and volunteer work across Canada and beyond. At just 19, she has gained experience in community engagement, the public and non-profit sectors, government, and student politics, earning recognition on local, national, and international levels. As the youngest board member of various organizations, including the Provincial Women’s Advisory Council and CBC Community Advisory Board, she paves the way for youth involvement. As President of the University of Manitoba Students’ Union, Divya champions DEI policies for 30,000 students. She also serves as Director of Communication for the Community of Big Hearts, a social enterprise focused on Indigenous reconciliation. Her commitment to DEI has led to her selection as a youth delegate for the United Nations 68th Commission on the Status of Women and as a UNICEF U-Report Ambassador. After moving to Canada at age 9, Divya continues to embody the spirit of seva through her ongoing volunteer work. Meet CanU alumn, Salena Starling. Salena Starling is the President and CEO of the Community of Big Hearts. As a community activist for Indigenous Youth, she is committed to promoting Truth and Reconciliation within the business community and beyond. Salena offers workshops on Indigenous history, unconscious biases, and the current situation of Indigenous peoples in Canada, sharing her lived experiences as a foster care survivor and third-generation child welfare survivor. She has recently did a TEDx talk and her work aims to raise awareness, advocate for foster care reform, and encourage meaningful action toward reconciliation. CanU Canada (CanU) The University of Can. is very glad to partner with Emma Khan and the Southwest and Newcomer teams! Their financial literacy learning experiences served over 350 CanU participants and volunteers over the past few months. We are looking forward to growing this impactful partnership with older CanU youth in the coming months.
Last week the Southwest Winnipeg team along with our Newcomer Specialist team had the pleasure of welcoming students back on campus with fun filled activities! Our team enjoys every opportunity to engage with students on campus and we are thrilled to have had this opportunity.
