🔔 Newsflash Flanders International Climate Action Programme: The demonstration projects for 2024 have been approved!   The Government of Flanders has approved €8.06 million in funding for 7 innovative demonstration projects under the 𝗙𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗲 (#FICAP). These projects, implemented in Africa, Asia, and South America, contribute to climate adaptation and mitigation efforts while carrying out Flanders’ international climate financing commitments.   🔎 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘍𝘐𝘊𝘈𝘗? FICAP supports climate adaptation and mitigation projects led by Flemish organizations in the Global South, focusing on innovative technological solutions, knowledge dissemination, and capacity building. The programme is coordinated by the Departement Omgeving and G-STIC.   💡 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘢 𝘥𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘫𝘦𝘤𝘵? Demonstration projects allow Flemish organizations to test innovative technologies and methods in real-world settings. With a focus on climate adaptation and mitigation, these projects provide tangible solutions to global challenges. They also highlight the power of collaboration between Flemish enterprises and partners, businesses, and communities worldwide.   ✅ 𝘈𝘱𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘥 𝘥𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘫𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘴: BENEO-Remy NV : sustainable rice cultivation in Vietnam EFICO: climate-smart agriculture in Tanzania BOSAQ: climate-adaptive water solutions in Colombia Hydrovolta: seawater desalination in Morocco Falerno: sustainable forestry and bio-charcoal in DR Congo Jump Energy: electric two-wheelers in Kenya Turbulent Hydro: micro-hydropower for agriculture and education in Suriname   With €6.47 million allocated earlier this year to 14 dissemination and capacity-building projects, the total FICAP funding for 2024 now amounts to €14.53 million.   📜 Stay tuned! Hooked on fossil fuels. So how can we move to a circular fashion economy? Meet Seamless 👚 The new Product Stewardship scheme for clothing in Australia - run by the Australian Fashion Council (AFC). Here are their guiding principles to create a circular fashion industry: ✅ CIRCULAR DESIGN - “designing, developing and making clothing differently.” ✅ CIRCULAR BUSINESS MODELS - “rethinking how citizens acquire their clothing.” ✅ CLOSING THE LOOP - “transforming how clothes are collected, sorted and recycled at the end of life.” ✅ CITIZEN BEHAVIOUR CHANGE - “changing the way we think about and engage with clothing.” So at an individual level how can we help influence this change towards circularity? Extreme heat events are ravaging the planet. On 22 July the global average temperature hit a new high of 17.16°C – beating the previous record set just one day earlier. Deadly heatwaves have hit Mexico, Italy, Spain, Morocco, Portugal and France – causing hundreds of fatalities and bringing life to a halt. Wildfires in Greece are forcing people from homes and hospitals, with firefighting efforts hindered by high winds. In Australia, the Great Barrier Reef is facing “existential threats” of extreme ocean heat – the highest recorded temperatures in 400 years. These devastating events continue to highlight the effects of human-driven global warming. Corporations and governments must play their part in prioritising the climate and reducing their impact. 💡 REALITY CHECK & PRACTICAL SOLUTIONS 👇 We are already well beyond exceeding our planetary boundaries. The majority of global eco systems have surpassed their tipping points, which continues to cause irreversible consensequences. No wonder extinction rates are rising year on year. 💀 🫂 As the human race and custodians of our home planet we must all take greater care of our home planet and all of it's inhabitants. OR the grim reality we will be facing is that our planet''s inhabitants (including ourselves "the human race") will cease to exist as we know it. As a Global community of communities, together we can prevent this and preserve our home planet including all of it's natural splendor through shared responsibility and working collectively. However, we need more than "conservation" 🪵 if we are to get through this alive. We need "re-generation"! (🌱 = 🌳 = 🏞) 👉 The biggest mistake we can all make is expecting that others (e.g. leaders and corporations acting in their own interests) are going to fix our problems - the problems we have all contributed to (in one way or another as consumers on a finite planet driven by an economic model depend on infinite growth 📈). 🕸 The web of life is not an abstract concept - it is grounded in material reality. As the only self proclaimed "HUMANE" race on "OUR" planet, the choices/decicions we all make and the habits we all have (and share) impact our home planet and all ecosystems (both beneath and around us). 🕓 Time is NOT on the side of any inhabitant of Earth. We all need to consider and rethink the impacts and inevitable implications of our individual actions (at both a local and global scale). We have no choice but to modify our ways of thinking 💭 to make the well-being of our planet ("planetary health") inclusive and a priority in our decision making processes (at all levels: personal, social, political, etc.). Dumping all our trash into an active volcano might seem like an easy fix, but it brings serious problems rather than solutions. Burning trash in a volcano would release toxic gases into the air, creating harmful pollution that could affect people, animals, and plants, even far from the volcano. Our atmosphere, already strained by pollution, would face even more damage, affecting the air quality for everyone. Volcanic areas are home to unique plants and animals that survive in harsh conditions. Dumping trash there would ruin these fragile ecosystems, as toxic waste could seep into water sources, harming the soil and natural beauty of the area. Transporting trash to an active volcano would also be costly and dangerous, with workers facing unpredictable volcanic activity. It doesn’t solve the core issue—how much waste we produce daily. What the planet really needs is a shift in how we think about waste: reducing the amount we create, reusing materials, and choosing eco-friendly options. Did you know atmospheric methane has increased in concentration by 160% since preindustrial times and accounted for 35% of warming from greenhouse gases from 2010 to 2019 ! It's an urgent problem and the majority of the 53 experts surveyed in this study felt that atmospheric methane will play a larger role in global warming by 2050. More support is needed to get behind research in this field. This project is boosting 'methane eating bacteria'  to slow global warming.
