Self-Sustainable City’s Post

Understanding the Air Quality Index (AQI) The Air Quality Index (AQI) is a crucial tool for assessing and communicating how clean or polluted the air is. It measures various pollutants, including particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), ground-level ozone (O3), carbon monoxide (CO), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and nitrogen dioxide (NO2). The AQI converts these measurements into a scale from 0 to 500, where lower numbers indicate better air quality and higher numbers signal worsening conditions. AQI levels are categorized into six color-coded ranges: Good, Moderate, Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups, Unhealthy, Very Unhealthy, and Hazardous. Each range has health implications, especially for vulnerable populations like children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing health conditions. To ensure a healthier environment, monitoring the AQI is vital. It helps in making informed decisions about outdoor activities, especially during high pollution days. Strategies to improve air quality include reducing vehicle emissions, using cleaner energy sources, and increasing green spaces.
