A super-power management skill that I can't believe is overlooked. It's the management of your cash reserves. The most critical time it's needed is when your business is starting to grow. When you need more staff, more clients, more stock or more property just to name a few. The thing is, most business owners are terrible at managing their cash. When their business does actually start to grow and scale - they'll start throwing cash at the wall and hoping it sticks. They end up running out of cash pretty fast with all hell breaking loose. You need a proper cash flow plan to scale up all aspects of your business. A very large number of small businesses in New Zealand use Xero software for their accounting needs. This month Xero have made changes to their plans. One of the most significant being the retiring of their GST Cashbook plan that was only available through Xero partner accountants. Many of our GST registered clients only required a simple cashbook. Unfortunately that option has been removed and the only Xero alternative is a considerably more expensive subscription, albeit with more bells and whistles. Those clients who already had a GST Cashbook will be able to keep using it for another 6-12 months. Thereafter they will also be moved over to the more expensive plan. The pricing and plans of all the new subscriptions have changed, so it is a good time to discuss your options with your accountant and do some strategic longer-term planning regarding your software choices going forward. STRATEGIC REVIEW: Accounting apps This one is for the Xero-only firms and MYOB-only firms. Is it still the best strategy to recommend just one accounting app to your clients? Putting all those eggs in one basket is getting a little risky. Vendors can: - Increase prices beyond what your clients are willing to pay  - Refocus their R&D on developing features for overseas markets  - Pull back on development of critical new features At varying times, we’ve seen all of this with all the big names – MYOB, Reckon, Sage and Xero.
