How to get more customers than Tom, Dick and Harry: It starts with beliefs. I met this morning with a marketing company that works with a number of people offering products using digital marketing. We were talking about cost per acquisition (CPA) strategies. She spoke of the challenge her company faces when prospective clients decide I want my cost per acquisition to be $x without an understanding of the myriad of factors that contribute to the cost of closing a sale. Wouldn't it be wonderful to just dictate a cost per acquisition that sells a product at a solid margin. My point isn't about CPAs; it's about the mistake that so many entrepreneurs make when they employ "hope as a strategy." Building a marketing strategy is about the creation of quality campaigns that can be tested and refined to lower the CPA. Building and growing a successful business is about learning and executing against best practices to provide a consistent result. HOPE CAN NEVER BE YOUR STRATEGY!

Build a marketing strategy that works in 1 hour. Decision paralysis is by far the biggest issue I hear from entrepreneurs struggling with marketing. They're not sure what to do or where to start, so they don't do anything. The cure for marketing procrastination is to strip away all of the complexity. Here's a simple step-by-step planning process anyone can use to get rolling with a solid marketing strategy. Define these 4 things... 1. Who 2. Where 3. How 4. What Who do you want to buy? Where do they spend their time? Where do they look for solutions? How will you get their attention? What do you want them to do once you have their attention? Once you've answered these four questions, you've defined your ideal customer, your marketing channel, your creative strategy, and your call to action. That's what we call a marketing strategy. You can get more sophisticated as you go. Keep it simple and execute well on these foundational elements to start.
