Words can’t fully express how encouraged, humbled, and grateful I am for Roman Ružbacký’s recognition of my work. In my DE&I journey, I often grapple with how to build and engage my network meaningfully. My goal has been to address under-discussed, often niche topics through an intersectional lens—to influence change and spark conversations that matter deeply to me. One of my biggest challenges has been finding the balance between depth and outreach. I can write with depth, but reaching a wider audience and amplifying impact isn’t always easy. Some of the articles Roman highlighted were ones I feared hadn’t made the mark. Recently, I experimented with more concise, punchy content designed for broader reach. But Roman’s post has reminded me that depth resonates too—and perhaps the key lies in balancing both styles of content. ⏸️ I took a moment to pause over the summer months and reflect on the current state of the interim market. In my 9 years as an interim contractor, the quietness of this period is unprecedented. Low business confidence and a scarcity of advertised opportunities due to roles being filled within personal networks pose significant challenges. External factors like elections and budgets only add to the complexity. 💻 A recent report mentioned the "Rise of the mid-life shirkers," but for those of us actively seeking work, this narrative feels far from reality. So, I utilized this time to rejuvenate, returning with a fresh perspective and a robust strategy for the future. My garden is flourishing 🏵️, and my golf ⛳ has seen improvement, although the putter is now stored away. A recent article by Culture AMP challenges conventional thinking around redundancies by examining the data. It points out that when you review the data, perceived upturn in employee satisfaction surveys within companies that were forced to make redundancies are due to new hires (who didn’t go through the redundancy period) having high engagement with their new company rather than long standing employees forgetting/forgiving layoffs.   With a number of sectors that we recruit with (such as Architecture/Design for example) having gone through a difficult period over the last 12-18 months it will be interesting to see how companies recreate trust with employees.

It’s been over 10 years and we are back in the cycle of layoffs. This article is a good reminder of the humanity that is needed as organisations enact changes for cost reduction or capability change. In 2012 as Head of HR Strategy, I oversaw a project with Toyota where we made 300 roles redundant in one day. That’s 300 people whose lives were changed forever. We started the project with respect and dignity in mind. It took 3 months of planning to execute so that every individual had a one on one conversation, time to ask questions, interpreters, psychologists, managers who were trained to handle the reactions and questions that were inevitable. Productivity did improve after that day, but we didn’t do the follow up research to know if that was out of fear or some other motivation. If we need to do layoffs, let’s ensure we keep the human element top of mind. P.S. When talking to employees who are fearful of losing their job I have often counselled that everyday is their chance to build insurance against the impact of such action. Keep learning, keep adding new achievements to your resume, keep building the network, make yourself valued. It makes you less likely to be laid off, but if you are let go, you won’t be as afraid about finding the next role. Last week I announced that Benchmarcx was announced as one of the best HR Service Providers and the Top Recruitment Technology in the 2024 HRD Australia's awards. For a candidate experience platform to win this speaks volumes to our uniqueness but also the rapid growth in how HR teams value the importance of candidate experience data - especially when they can demonstrate the impact of CX beyond the hire. I built Benchmarcx, because as a former Head of Talent Acquisition, I couldn't gather data that showed how I compared to my competition (over 70% of people applied to 4 or move roles at the same time as applying for their current role) or an impact beyond the hire.
