Google is launching AI Overviews in Australian search results this week - here's what you need to know. 💠We've seen the almost-comical wrong information examples from the US, Google 'believing' sarcastic comments from Reddit as truth, put glue in your pizza sauce so the cheese doesn't slide off etc... Humans are also naturally going to try and break things like AI Overviews, find the worst case examples. 💠Google has had enough months to assess the negative PR and where it goes wrong, and seemingly address this / scale it back in some areas. Honestly I still think elements of it are a rushed job to try match Bing, and it's still a somewhat undercooked and flawed product. 💠AI Overviews won't show for all queries. Some SEO / rank tracking platforms are incorporating reporting on it and will show you for what keywords / what SOV etc. AI Overviews are present. Some platforms aren't there yet. 💠AI Overviews don't always pull from the top 10 ranking results, but as they refine it, I believe they will naturally skew towards higher ranking websites as these generally reflect higher quality information per their algorithms in determining quality content. 💠Your SEO strategy shouldn't drastically change, anyone telling you to revolutionise and re-do everything is just trying to sell you something out of fear and doubt. 💠If you do want an actionable strategy for this - Put absolutely every bit of information about your product and every question you ever get asked about customers on your website, and structure it clearly with language a 5 year old could understand. Small ranking boost (or drop) in local SERP 🚀 I read an article from Joy Hawkins (link in comments) a while back regarding a ranking boost happens when you acquired the 10th review on GBP. Did a test on a service-based client in Sydney. The local ranking started spread across Sydney CBD when they acquire the 10th review early Oct as seen on 6 Oct screenshot. It works! The experiment doesn't end here. I wasn't intentionally going to test the next part. 😅 Google decides to remove one of the reviews end of October for whatever reason. Within a week, the local ranking went back to the original state. It is interesting to see how local search algo reacts to the this. Just because you see a ranking boost after reaching your 10th review doesn't mean continuing to add more will produce the same results. Other factors will come in to play to improve the local rankings.

PMax is great and all but don’t let it do ALL the heavy lifting if you plan to truly maximise profit from Google Ads. PMax can be seen as a discovery campaign. Use it to discover new things that work. Once discovered, those new things should be implemented into manual campaigns where you improve the ROI through more strategic management of things like targeting and creative. If you’re a busy biz owner running your own ads, I forgive you for only using PMax if that’s what you are doing. But if you’ve hired an agency or person and THEY are only doing PMax despite them being a full time Gads pro, this warrants some concern.

LiveAgent are doing an incredible job with their SEO (including link building). But why are they able to generate $80k a month from SEO (Ahrefs traffic value)? While their content strategy and link building has taken a long time to evolve to this level, you will see in the break down that years later it’s paying dividends. Google's Search Generative Experience (SGE) is set within the coming days to Australia. This will no doubt reshape our local Google digital landscape. As SEO professionals, it's crucial we stay ahead of the curve. I have already been speaking to clients and other professionals about this since SGE launched overseas. Had a bit of a play with the search function in #ChatGPT. As someone who regularly uses Gemini for search purposes this I have to say feels a lot slicker and intuitive. As shown in the image below ChatGPT pulls through map packs and listings on localised searches with link citations which is incredibly useful. Should Google be worried? I very much doubt it right now because (and I'm speculating) it would be limited by it's existing user base who use this tool for the broader functionality. At the moment I doubt any non ChatGPT users would download this purely for the search functionality. I could be wrong here but time will tell. With it being a Friday I obviously used the search function for some essential research as you can see from the search query I entered.

A mid-sized ecommerce website in Australia has lost a lot of traffic this year. This is my summary based on our analysis across all components that we assess. If you need help with traffic loss audits, I can usually complete it within a week as a once off deliverable and specific granular action plan for recovery. Another trick that some dishonest (or inexperienced) digital agencies in Australia are doing. Inflate the returns by adding conversion values from Add to Cart as a Primary metric where it counts the sale even if the customer doesn't complete check out! It should be used as a Secondary action with 0 value attached. Why would they do this? Well it makes them appear to achieve great returns to you as the client, by inflating the ROAS metric that can then be used to convince customers to lift their ad spend. They can even show Google's status marker of "Limited by budget" (in red below) as a means to convince you. Higher ad spend = more they can charge as so many agencies tie their fees to a percentage of adspend. The screenshot below shows the metric of add to cart being a conversion metric to claim revenue, not the actual completion of the order itself. These were placed across various campaigns as the Primary metric (not Secondary as highlighted below since being corrected) Thank you Lana Centofanti for highlighting another trick that's commonly used for unsuspecting stores and a tactic to inflate results. $277,760 more sales in the last three months I've been working with this client for around 18 months and revised their previously stagnant SEO strategy. Here are the four biggest levers we pulled: 👉 Optimised collection pages - updated page titles, improved their existing content and internal links between collection pages. 👉 Created genuinely helpful pain-point content for their audience (1/week cadence). People are now finding their product as a solution to their problems. 👉 Leveraged digital-PR to build highly authoritative & relevant links. They've added around 130 links over the past 12 months. 👉 Built out more content on product pages, added FAQs, collected (A LOT of) reviews and added structured data. We've also helped DOUBLED their email list through content upgrades too, with their email channel now driving 600% more revenue than last year. I love it when SEO helps out other channels too.
