TrinityP3’s Lydia Feely recently toured the US agency scene in New York and called out three of the standout trends in how US agencies are building AI into their product offering. What’s interesting is that there appears to be a spectrum in how agencies, particularly in the US, are doing this. Some are playing where you might expect using AI’s abilities to improve workflow and looking to use AI to drive maximum efficiency. Others are going further and using Generative AI as an insight tool to uncover cultural trends and provide insights, particularly in niche communities, which might not be otherwise obvious to those outside of that community. Another great AiMCO – Australian Influencer Marketing Council member event, focused on Black Friday with panellists Bryce Coombe at Hypetap, Lena Zak at Amazon and Lauren Dawber (Small) at Optus, hosted at JCDecaux Australia offices When many media only offer audiences when clients want outcomes We are now in an era where the biggest growth channels are retail media and creators. Creators have that authentic and connected audience and what better retail moment than #BlackFriday to prove outcomes. Our talk focused on the power of influencers/creators and the impacts on Black Friday retail outcomes. Thanks to Hypetap for the data and key observations 💡Black Friday gains popularity Year after Year Mentions of Black Friday in Influencer captions has been steadily increasing since 2021, with 2024 numbers projected to double mentions in 2021. 💡A shift away from Boxing Day Mentions of Boxing Day sales have been declining year over year, while Black Friday mentions have continued to rise. In 2023, Black Friday mentions were up 20% compared to the previous year, while Boxing Day mentions saw a 10% decrease. 💡Black Friday is getting earlier Influencers are starting to promote Black Friday deals earlier than ever before. In 2021, posts began to appear in late November, but by 2023, some influencers were already mentioning the event in September. 💡The rise of online shopping Mentions of "online" in Black Friday captions have also been on the rise, while mentions of bricks and mortar stores have declined. This year, online shopping is expected to surpass in-store shopping for the first time, driven by influencer marketing. 💡Influencers Driving Purchase Decisions 20% of Australian consumers go to Influencer channels during the purchase process for reviews, advice and direction I would like to thank our panellists for delivering such valuable insights and also their own reflections on the things that make a content creator effective in building trust and driving results. Earlier this week, AU Publisher Partnerships & Growth Manager Maddison Glendinning and AU Partnerships and Growth Manager Katie Willis attended the IAB’s Affiliate & Partnership Marketing Summit Sydney. Publishers, affiliate networks and brands alike came together for the evening to discuss some of the challenges facing the industry, as well as the rise in the perception of affiliates as a viable marketing channel. ICYMI, here are some of the top takeaways from the night: ✏ Content is key In the 2024 IAB Affiliate & Partnership Marketing Report, respondents rated content (alongside rewards) as the most valuable affiliate model. And it’s important to safeguard quality content, according to Are Media Pty Ltd's CEO Jane Huxley who passionately told the crowd: “Quality content is incredibly expensive to create, but generative AI cannot replace humans [to create it].” Editors and writers are incredibly skilled at knowing what their readers are interested in and how to write about it in an authentic piece of copy. As Jane noted, being able to balance commercial considerations alongside editorial integrity can only be done by humans. 🛍 Affiliates is on the rise The study also had some interesting stats about the state of play in affiliates at the moment, including: - 53% of advertisers and agencies have increased overall spend on affiliates over the last year. - In the current economic climate, 67% of respondents thought that the affiliate marketing channel is more important now to help achieve business goals. - Nearly two-thirds of publishers have increased revenue from affiliates and partnerships marketing channels over the last year. - Content and rewards also have the highest planned increase in spend over the next year with 6/10 advertisers saying they plan to pump more money into the channel. 💭 Affiliates is about more than just revenue A panel of industry insiders including Commission Factory's Client Strategy Manager Kate Eringa, and Global Head of Marketing at BikesOnline USA, Rainer Schmid spoke about the challenges facing the affiliate channel – namely, lack of understanding, as well as expectations on outcomes. Kate is an advocate for testing and learning, reiterating that affiliates is about more than just revenue and that there's value in brand awareness, acquiring new customers and getting the word out out about new launches. Rainer also called out the cost-effectiveness of the affiliates channel versus traditional platforms. "Google and Facebook are expensive – we keep pulling money from those channels to reinvest into affiliates," he told the crowd. There's some light at the end of a brutal tunnel for parts of Australian media, according to PwC's Australian Entertainment and Media Outlook report, released this morning. Retail media – particularly Coles and Woolworths – will take a bigger chunk of search revenues. Consumers will keep spending billions of dollars on content, though much will be soaked up by telcos. Broadcasters are managing the transition to streaming better than newsmedia went digital – but are currently in the transition danger zone. Digital out of home is on a tear although the network growth which has underpinned revenue growth may have reached equilibrium according to capex spend analysis by the consultancy. Gaming is finally benefiting from the immutable law of advertising - money follows the eyeballs, whether that's all those eyeballs down in the basement playing League of Legends, Call of Duty, and Halo, or on the train to work playing Monopoly Go, Roblox or Candy Crush. Amidst an increasingly fragmented media landscape, top Australian media executives sat down with B&T to discuss how this is impacting advertising spend. While the media executives agreed ‘measurement is key when it comes to deciding where to allocate ad dollars’, with the fragmented landscape executives sometimes find that their measurement capabilities suffer from fragmentation and don't unlock better decision making. A three-speed marketing economy is emerging per comprehensive data collected from 105 marketers representing $3bn-plus in marketing spend across B2B and B2B markets in Australia The FY25 Marketing & Customer Benchmarks report finds a three-way split on investment trends across those pulling back hard, those holding and those powering into the new financial year. Marketers now have heightened responsibility for customer thrust upon them, adding to already complex remits. In turn, KPIs are shifting hard to customer lifetime value (CLV) with metrics like net promoter score (NPS), cost per acquisition and purchase frequency in decline. For many (43 per cent) performance or lower funnel investment will rise. Interestingly, Addressable TV, once predominately an upper-funnel channel, is now offering marketers more options across the entire funnel. By combining the high impact of brand awareness with the precision of digital, it supports both brand building and performance marketing.
