Last week I was fortunate to attend the Queensland Decarbonisation Hub event. The program had an interesting array of speakers from government, academia through to native people and quantum computing experts. The summary of the first session was that we need to reduce carbon by 43% by 2030, clearly a large target to hit. While there were a lot of possibilities in the room around how we could decarbonisation the state, I felt that the discussion didn't focus around where we need to make the most impact. For me, understanding where we need to make the largest impact would be a fantastic place to start. Perhaps focusing on the big rocks first? #decarbonisation #industrialenergyefficiency

This paper is a few years old and focused on agent-based ecological modelling. However, it shows that Australia is/was the global leader (based on the percentage of modelling papers published) for making research models publicly available. Great result. However, the paper also demonstrates that sharing details on a computer model is insufficient; it requires good documentation, a DOI and accessibility to lift citation-based impact. I'd love to hear if anybody is interested in us hosting on-demand research models using an API framework, including documentation and a DOI; if so, could you connect and message me?

Thrilled to share our latest research, 🚀“From Tokens to Materials: Leveraging Language Models for Scientific Discovery”! Alongside my amazing colleagues from GreenDynamics, UNSW AI Institute and UNSW Computer Science and Engineering, Sepecial thanks to Microsoft Research resource support through AFMR program. We explore the potential of science large language models to design advanced materials based on knowledge pre-trained on millions of scientific articles in just seconds ⚡. Here’s a glimpse into what we achieved: - 🌐 Matter2Vec V0.1 (Beta): By refining embeddings and optimizing context-aware strategies, our domain-specific material science representation outperformed conventional methods, showing a SOTA performance in material properties prediction tasks. - 🧩 Tokenization Innovation: We tackled the “tokenizer effect,” a key obstacle in material science NLP applications, achieving better performance by fine-tuning tokenization strategies for complex material names. - ⚡ Accelerating Discovery: Our approach doesn’t just predict properties—it helps researchers quickly identify promising materials, ultimately saving time and resources that would otherwise be spent on trial-and-error experiments. With 45 indicators about the workforce across 7 entry points, 9 subsectors and 11 combinations of detailed variables there is a wealth of information about the construction and infrastructure sectors. Australian CTOs should note the release of the Select Committee on AI's interim report. My key take aways are: 1️⃣ AI's impact on democracy, highlights the potential for AI to influence elections and public trust. 2️⃣ The report calls for regulatory measures to address AI-generated disinformation, such as deepfakes, and stresses the importance of digital literacy to navigate AI advancements. 3️⃣ It also points to international regulatory examples and recommends voluntary codes for AI content and a review of AI's role in politics. 4️⃣ Improving AI literacy among Australians is crucial for navigating the AI landscape. New Microsoft research released today shows that generative AI (GenAI) is now being used in nearly every large organisation across Australia and New Zealand (ANZ). The findings indicate a pivotal moment, with 100 per cent of survey respondents reporting personal time savings at work due to GenAI.
