🇦🇺🦘We are currently going down under! We've been invited to join the EnergyLab Scaleup Program, an initiative dedicated to bringing solutions to the Australian energy landscape. With a large industry such as mining, Australia needs a big decarbonization effort. Currently, coal produced in the country accounts for a large share of electricity generation and total energy consumption. Australia has set an ambitious target of 82% renewable electricity by 2030. Now, critics have calculated that at the current rate, it will fall 20 percentage points short. Still, 60% renewables, much of it from PV, means high volatility and curtailment. Kraftblock can avoid grid costs and use the energy to decarbonize the industry. Dr. Madeline Taylor from Macquarie University explores the untapped potential of agrivoltaics in Australia, highlighting the symbiotic use of land for agriculture and solar photovoltaics (PV). Despite successful pilot projects, agrivoltaics has yet to scale in Australia due to the absence of a federal policy integrating agriculture and renewable energy. She advocates for regulatory reform and increased investment to overcome cost barriers and unlock opportunities for agricultural landholders to benefit from distributed energy resources (DER). ANU has been awarded funding for research into technologies that reduce the cost of solar energy for Australians. One of these includes The Australian National University-led project that aims to develop tandem solar cells and modules to the point of commercial production. This project is a five-year joint venture with partners at Jinko Solar, one of the world’s foremost solar module manufacturers, and research teams at UNSW and the University of Melbourne. “This project will contribute to accelerating the global transition away from fossil fuels and towards clean energy,” says lead chief investigator Professor Klaus WEBER. "A reduction in the cost of PV electricity will help to accelerate the uptake of renewables in Australia. This will be particularly helpful given ambitious plans to export solar energy – either directly via high voltage transmission lines to our neighbours – or via the generation of solar fuels such as hydrogen and ammonia,” says Professor Weber. A team of scientists at School of Chemistry, UNSW Sydney have successfully developed an organic material that is able to store protons, and used it to create a rechargeable proton battery in the lab. By leveraging hydrogen ions – protons – instead of traditional lithium, these batteries hold promise for addressing resource scarcity, environmental impact, safety and cost. The latest findings, recently published in the journal Angewandte Chemie, highlight the battery’s ability to store energy quickly, last longer, and perform well under sub-zero conditions. The material – tetraamino-benzoquinone (TABQ) – developed by PhD candidate Sicheng Wu and Professor Chuan Zhao, in collaboration with UNSW Engineering and ANSTO, has been shown to support rapid proton movement using hydrogen-bond networks. #manufacturing #australianmanufacturing #energystorage #batterytechnology #researchanddevelopment

The start-up SolarisAI Pty Ltd, from The University of Queensland is able to use AI/machine learning to conduct analytics on solar panels. The challenge they are solving is that in massive solar projects, it is difficult to detect an issue within these large-scale solar arrays that could have millions of panels. Their software is able to automate the process of inspecting every panel for damage and is able to identify defective or inefficient solar panels and suggest precise maintenance actions. Energy costs are rising in growing nations worldwide. In Australia, according to the Guardian's findings, power prices surged by 6.9% in 2023 compared to 2022. SolarisAI's innovative techniques promise to slash the cost of solar energy in Australia by swiftly identifying and replacing inefficient solar panels. Associate Professor Rahul Sharma, based at The University of Queensland, notes that underperforming solar farms cost the industry approximately $400 million annually. This software exemplifies how data science drives efficiency in clean energy, playing a vital role in making it more affordable. New hydrogen micro-credential courses developed by Deakin University and Engineering Education Australia (EEA) will provide critical skills to help reach Australia's net zero and clean energy targets. The program, which features four micro-credential courses and one webinar, will focus on upskilling workers across industries including energy, transport and government, to propel Australia's hydrogen economy. The partnership between Deakin University and EEA was formed in 2022 following research from Deakin's hydrogen technology hub Hycel into the development and strengthening of a prosperous hydrogen workforce. We are thrilled to share that the Queensland Government has awarded $10M to the Quantum Decarbonisation Alliance (QDA), a groundbreaking collaboration between The University of Queensland, QUBIC, Griffith University, Australia's national science agency CSIRO, and PsiQuantum alongside 23 other partners, in a mission to apply quantum technologies to solve critical decarbonisation challenges.  The alliance is set to leverage cutting-edge quantum technologies to tackle pressing decarbonisation challenges across various sectors, including energy, agriculture, and carbon capture. The Delicate Art of Securing Electricity Resource Adequacy Join us for a public lecture on the use of various kinds of capacity payments to electricity generators as they become more internationally widespread. Controversial for many years, with the energy transition now introducing so much more uncertainty into production and consumption, capacity markets are often key to ensuring resource adequacy and "keeping the lights on" during times of scarcity. Capacity payments are substantial and are paid essentially just for being available. In determining he annual requirements for capacity, the risk of energy shortage is usually assessed according to national reliability standards. Then procurements for adequacy are usually made via auctions. Whilst the process of determining adequacy is model-intensive and apparently precise, in practice it is very fragile in its assumptions. This presentation will review alternative designs for capacity markets and critically review the analytical steps involved in determining the auction parameters. In particular, it reviews the engagement of different technologies in capacity markets and assesses the limited revenue opportunities for renewable, storage and interconnector facilities. At the end, it is intended that this review will lead to a discussion of what the international experiences mean for the implementation of capacity remuneration mechanisms in Australia.
