After years of debate, the Senate passed the Aged Care Reform Act last night, marking a significant turning point for the industry. The reforms aim to address the financial sustainability of the sector and improve care outcomes for residents. Aged Care Providers, who have faced prolonged uncertainty over funding and struggled to make informed investment and capital expenditure decisions, can now move forward with greater clarity. From a pure finance perspective, the key reforms are: ✅ Increasing the Maximum RAD Cap from $550,000 to $750,000 allowing aged care providers to charge a higher RAD, which helps cover accommodation costs for residents ✅ A retention fee of 2% will be applied to incoming residents' RADs. This is part of efforts to ensure that providers can manage financial stability and operational costs. The 2% retention will be withheld from the RAD payments when residents leave the facility ✅ Boost in the maximum accommodation charge that providers can charge All of the above have profitability, balance sheet and most important cash flow implications which need to be modelled and forecast to ensure the correct financial, investment and capital expenditure decisions are made. What cyber security does your business have in place?      Research late last year found small and medium businesses are one of the least cyber prepared sectors. It was revealed only 15% of SMEs conduct extensive training around scams and cyber security risks, while four in 10 had “not much training at all”.     Today NAB is urging Australian businesses to boost their defence, offering a year of free cyber security software to eligible small and medium business customers in partnership with global cyber security firm CrowdStrike.      “As Australia’s leading business bank, we have a key role to play in helping educate and assist small and medium-sized businesses to ensure they remain secure. 📣ICT improvements for DFA 🔐 Over the next quarter, DFA will be moving its existing ICT systems under the protection of the Defence network. This approach is the most secure, and helps ensure DFA can better protect the information we have about families. At present, DFA uses an external data and information management system. Under these changes, information collected by DFA will only be accessible by DFA appointees. This also applies to historical data. We will do our best to minimise impacts to families while we transition to Defence’s ICT systems. The most significant impact of this change will be an update to DFA’s email addresses at the start of 2025.
