In April, one of our Board members, and the co-chair of the EOA Membership Council, are delivering a session at the prestigious NCEO Annual Employee Ownership Conference in Tampa, Florida. Our peer across the Atlantic, The National Center for Employee Ownership (NCEO) is one of the largest trade bodies promoting EO in the US. Sam Boustred (Global Members’ Board Chair of Scott Bader and an EOA Board member) and Michael Hodgson (Chair of Glide and co-Chair of the EOA Membership Council) will discuss alternatives to Employee Stock Ownership Plans and showcase the successful Gripple UK & Ireland and Scott Bader model. They’ll also celebrate the UK’s EO success as demonstrated in the EO Knowledge Programme, commissioned by the EOA. This first-of-its-kind data highlights the many benefits EO is bringing businesses – from greater productivity and creating more jobs, to increased economic contribution and company profits, among many others. One of the biggest struggles for agency owners is devising a team leader commission structure that incentives individual contribution from the team lead but also incentives the team lead to pour energy/effort and time into their team. Often, it is too heavily weighted on the individual commission component, which leads to the team lead focusing their energy on their own billings rather than investing time in leading the team. There are some realities we need to consider when devising a good structure. While we can't move all of the incentive to team performance (as we usually still need the leader to bill), we can structure it so there is a tipping point. It needs to be lucrative for the team lead and lucrative for the business. Our next in-person event is a Roundtable with agency owners next week, on how to devise a team leader commission structure that works. We'll share what we've seen work, what hasn't worked, and the things to consider. My business partner Kyle Blake at KBFC will be running this session with me.
