What Does The Structure Of A Reliability Improvement Plan Look Like? This is one of my Monash University assignments in the unit GEG7124 - Understanding Reliability. This assignment is a practical real problem where we need to solve at the workplace. In this assignment we were to identify and describe a workplace reliability problem and prepare a comprehensive reliability program to solve this problem. We were also required to include a cost assessment of implementing our plan. Pay attention to the structure of the plan which you could use as a template for your perusals.

The first step in recognising failure is to identify what constitutes as a failure. Failure doesn't always mean a failed component, it can also describe a loss of function. An equipment/system can ( and most often does) serve more than one function. Defining equipment/system functions is key to recognising failures.

Although my job title may not contain Designer, Developer, or Data scientist, I believe all three areas are important when effectively managing a frontline team in a technical environment. I had a great chance today to take a break from looking after a newborn and attend the 10th DDD Perth (Thanks Wes Toleman for the last minute invite and Jason Gilbert for getting me there), with 1400 other local technical minds to learn about current industry trends, reflect on lessons learnt and propose ideas about how we can do better in the future. A few key things I came away with: 1. What are the 'billion dollar' mistakes that we are currently making and can they be avoided. Are the technical workarounds/hacks (implemented with the best of intentions) that are going into production now, going to cause us an order of magnitude more technical debt in the future. 2. AI is coming, how can we use it safely and securely to improve the way we operate. Rail is an industry that is notoriously slow to jump on new trends, how can we speed up this process (starting in non-safety critical contexts) to leverage the benefits faster.

Fast Charging For Iron Ore Mining The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) has announced a $10 million grant to Fortescue to develop, build, and demonstrate first of a kind fast chargers for heavy mine site vehicles. Fortescue’s $35.3 million ‘Fast Charger for Heavy Battery Electric Vehicles’ project will develop 6 MW fast chargers, capable of charging 240 tonne battery electric trucks in under 30 minutes. ARENA CEO Darren Miller said the project would help reduce emissions in one of Australia’s most carbon intensive industries. “ARENA is working to reduce emissions from Australia’s heavy industry, with heavy haulage high on the priority list for the mining sector.” “Heavy haulage for remote mine sites contributes around a quarter of the mining industry’s emission and is considered a hard to abate sector, so we’re investing in the technologies that will be part of the solution,” Mr Miller said. The funding has been awarded under the Australian Government’s Industrial Transformation Stream, part of the Powering the Regions Fund. This $400 million program aims to support emissions reduction at existing industrial facilities in regional Australia. The project is the next stage of fast charger development for Fortescue, building on an existing 3 MW prototype. Once developed, the fast charger will be installed, demonstrated, and tested at Fortescue’s Hazelmere and Christmas Creek mine sites. Fortescue Zero CEO, Ellie Coates said, "“Leveraging our world-class capability in battery and charging solutions from motorsport, the fast chargers have been developed for the challenging conditions of the Pilbara. 10 years later, this is still a relevant article. 1 of my earlier career goals was to run an engineering pmo where I'd drive the institutionalising of engineering project excellence. I have a burning belief that engineering has a lot of value to unlock in our economy but we need to ensure practitioners of the trade are equipped with pm, innovation and entrepreneurship. This is a bit out a character for my self. But how can a country like Australia with one of the biggest iron ore deposits in the world only have 1 structural steel mill. Which could possibly be going into administration. I’m trying to understand why all the big players in mining iron ore and coal can’t step in and create a profitable organisation that makes Australia the steel making hub of the world rather than just an exporter. FPA Australia members that voting for the board elections is still open until October 17th. I’m seeking your support and vote for John Lynch ‘s nomination for the board. Listed below the current challenges from member companies around Australia, which John will be focusing on if elected: 1.     Accessing Australian Standards at a cost-effective price 2.     Development of a new AS1851 and training material to support its introduction. 3.     Creating pathways for entry into the fire industry by traineeships, cadets, and apprenticeship programs. 4.     Closer relationships with government to influence accreditation or licensing schemes that reflect the tasks that our members perform. Make them understand that the Fire Industry has its own identity and specific skillsets 5.     Membership benefits that can be used to reduce the cost of running a small or medium sized fire company.

Expectations vs Reality Some of the most productive outcomes come out of the hardest conversations. I've had clients reach out to me in regards to what experience they expect from contractors on their site, 5+ years post trade, all the machine experience, 5+ years experience FIFO, Breakdown experience.... For minimal charge. We can provide almost any level of experience, and we are transparent with our candidates and clients in regards to expectations and experience. Over the years this conversation has gone from scary to welcomed. This becomes a teachable moment, I'm happy to take onboard certain feedback, but I'm also happy to give feedback. It usually goes like this - "100% get what you are saying, but the reality of the market, and what it would cost as a charge rate for that level of experience doesn't match our current charge rate. I'm more than happy to communicate your expectations to the team, as long as there is flexibility around the charge rate..." The reply is usually met with silence and then some negotiation. Either a negotiation on the expectation vs the current charge rate, or a negotiation on the expectation for a new charge rate. Safety is integral to us at Rio Tinto. Be it physical, mental, emotional or in a more recent case – CYBER SAFETY! In a recent experience of cybercrime/ malpractice, a colleague of mine received a message from a dummy whatsapp account with my image as the profile picture. The message (from a suspicious number which had a US country code) had urgency in tone and was written in impeccable English. What would follow next would be a financial transaction- the fake user / cyber criminal pretending to be ‘me’ would ask for money. Being aware of the prevalent fraudulent cyber matters my colleague immediately reached out to me and apprised me of the incident. We were able to report this well in time and mitigate the threat of any potential cybercrimes. This brings me to think of the increasing use and misuse of popular social media channels where we readily put our personal details without any protective firewalls. Every year India sees a double- digit surge in cyber crimes and economic offenses. With cyber threats growing in frequency and complexity, it is more important now than ever to fortify our defenses and stay ahead of malicious actors. We can protect ourselves by the following. - Be suspicious of messages from unfamiliar numbers. - Carefully read the contents of any message to be sure they reflect the tone and language of the sender who is familiar to us. - Do not respond to that message if there is even the slightest doubt. - Immediately reach out to the person who's identity you feel has been compromised (in this case, from myself) to verify if the message is genuine. Follow these pointers to enjoy the benefits of social media while safeguarding ourselves from fraudulent actors.
