Paramedics value continuous improvement. For them, raising concerns can lead to valuable changes in practice that improve outcomes for patients and paramedics. So what type of culture do they have that supports this continuous improvement and how do they create it? Find out in this article, the second in a series of 4 based on a talk that I gave at Agile Australia, exploring what organisations can learn from paramedics about teamwork, collaboration and leadership. It was great to celebrate not just the outstanding sports achievements of female athletes in 2024 but also the impactful policy changes that are paving the way for even greater progress.

I'm fascinated by how paramedics work and I believe there's much we can learn from them. Despite working in highly unpredictable and complex environments they consistently achieve impressive results.

Between 2022 and 2023, paramedics from Ambulance Victoria attended over one million incidents. A staggering 95% of patients rated their care as ‘good’ or ‘very good’. When I learned about this I got curious. How do they achieve such remarkable results? To find out, I teamed up with my uncle, Nick Roder - an experienced Mobile Intensive Care Ambulance (MICA) paramedic. Together we explored what organisations can learn from paramedics about teamwork, collaboration and leadership. This is the first in a series of four articles where we will dive into insights and practical techniques from the world of paramedicine that you can apply to empower your teams to do their best work, every day. https://lnkd.in/gFxPqsRD #collaboration #teamwork #paramedicine #AgileAustralia

What inspires me most is the opportunity to engage with Sydney's incredible climate community. Recently, I attended a Climate Conversation Workshop led by Olivia Burmester from ProSocia and Alexander Horton from econome, who facilitated a powerful discussion on overcoming climate anxiety and fostering leadership through principles of psychological safety. The stories shared in that room were remarkable, stories of personal victories and the challenges we all face when trying to engage others in climate conversations. These moments remind me how essential it is to create safe spaces for dialogue and connection around climate issues. Fossil fuel companies have long tried to shift the blame of climate change onto individual consumers. But what they didn’t anticipate was the sheer determination this has sparked in people everywhere. Every day, I meet individuals committed to action—whether they realize it or not, they are part of the climate solution. Here’s the truth: no matter your industry or role, your job is a climate job. The more we talk about it, the closer we come to collective action on the scale we need. It all starts with courage, knowledge and a passion to share your story, and spark the conversation. Let's lead the way, one dialogue at a time and create safe spaces, support climate anxiety through sharing positive stories about people being part of change, new tech innovation, action will deliver hope - and for action we NEED hope, they drive each other! #ClimateLeadership #ClimateCommunication #Climateanxiety #ClimateAction #Positivetippingpoints

In a world where so much bad is happening it’s uplifting and inspiring talking to people like these. Thanks for sharing your insights and for sharing not only your work related but also your personal experiences. It was beautiful to be part of such an honest conversation about climate leadership.

I'll be honest. I haven't engaged with COP 29 at all these past two weeks. Apart form one video I saw from Al Gore that was the type of call to action I want to see more of. It's very disheartening to see the global leading conference on climate change slowly be whittled away from it's original intentions as it succumbs to being bought out by petrostates more wiling to push fossil fuel agendas. From the chief executive of COP 29 discussing investment opportunities for Azerbajan's state oil and gas company to Azerbajan's president criticising Western fake news claiming oil and gas are gifts from god. It's all starting to resemble some bizarro alternative reality more likely to be dreamt up by the writing room of the Simpsons. I'm still hopeful that a $1.3 trillion deal is able to be brokered to assist the most vulnerable nations that will be affected by climate change - but we will see. What I'm most inspired by however are conversations I get to have with local members of the Sydney climate community. It was amazing getting to hear the climate stories of this great bunch as Olivia Burmester from ProSocia and I co-facilitated a conversation on overcoming Climate Anxiety to show leadership in climate conversations through instilling principles of psychological safety. It was awesome hearing the stories of everyone in the room, the major wins each person has had as well as the challenges we all face in trying to talk more about climate with our friends, families and communities. If there's one thing that fossil fuel companies have done a good job of, it's shifting the blame of climate change onto the individual consumer. What they may not have bargained for however is the individual determination this has instilled in so many people I get the privilege of talking to on a daily and weekly basis. A lot of people tell me it's inspiring the work people in climate do without realising that they're involved in working on climate themselves. No matter what industry or role you're in, your job is a climate job. And the more you can talk about that, the quicker we'll be able to mobilise to take the action we need to. It just starts with being a little bit brave, clearing your throat and having a conversation.

On Thursday Olivia Burmester and I will be hosting a group of people to help them think through how they can show leadership in communicating about climate at Greenhouse. I honestly couldn't think of a more pressing time to show such leadership. COP29 Azerbaijan kicked off and recently the CEO Elnur Soltanov was caught and filmed by an undercover actor promoting fossil fuel deals at the conference. The global conference on climate change is increasingly being sold out to fossil fuel companies to push their own definitions of what climate change is. Just last week, Donald Trump was elected with an overwhelming mandate to dismantle legislation protecting the environment and drill more oil. In his justification he said that all the Environment Protection Agencies are, are organisation's trying to make some money. Mandatory Climate Reporting coming into effect next year - whilst a huge win for the climate sector - has lead to sustainability teams, roles and talent increasingly being viewed as cost-centres by corporate Australia. Some of our best sustainability talent are being viewed as 'burners not earners' which limits the ability for us to make strides in building more resilient and sustainable businesses able to weather not just the climate but economic recession. It's easy to think that your voice won't have much of an effect. It's easy to re-share other people's thought leadership on matters such as climate and the environment. But in essence what does is empower people like the CEO of COP 29 and Donald Trump to keep prioritising short-term profits and sell our futures to the present whilst lining their own pockets and keep false narratives being pedalled. Using your own voice engages your direct community, which might spark someone else close to you to start using their voice, empowering our ability to engage more systematically as a movement. So if you want to learn how you can use your voice, backed by the principles of psychological safety, to empower people to talk more about their climate anxiety and overcome systemic barriers in place, be sure to grab your ticket! We look forward to seeing you there!

Creating a positive change begins with authentic conversations. Climate communication isn't just about talking, it's also about listening. Sadly many people never have the opportunity to discuss how they feel and have their voices heard. Join us on Thursday to explore how you can take your first step in climate communication.
