The results of an independent transport study commissioned by the City of Rockingham show that the road network in the Cape Peron area is already at capacity during peak times, and traffic will increase over the next few years until it can no longer function effectively. The City is advocating for state and federal investment in the local road network, and for the broader traffic implications of the AUKUS defence project to be considered. There are amazing opportunities for people in this region, but we need to ensure that local businesses and the community are brought along on this journey. Key to the success of these investments will be close and ongoing local engagement and we look forward to seeing how DefenceWest and other government agency partners will work to build social licence as these investments take shape.
10,000 Defence Industry jobs coming to Western Australia. The Western Australian Government has signed a Cooperation Agreement with the Department of Defence that will result in one of the largest federal government investments in the State’s history. The Federal Government will establish a Defence Precinct within the Australian Marine Complex (AMC) at Henderson, and in doing so, will bring nuclear submarine depot-level maintenance to Western Australia. Depot-level maintenance, the process whereby nuclear submarines are removed from the water and repaired and maintained in a dry environment for sometimes up to two years at a time, is the most valuable part of a submarine’s life-cycle. It is anticipated that this work will employ 3,000 direct shipbuilding jobs, and many more indirect jobs. This establishes Western Australia as the largest nuclear submarine sustainment and maintenance hub in the Southern Hemisphere. Through the Cooperation Agreement, both the State and the Commonwealth have committed to supporting continuous naval shipbuilding and submarine sustainment in Western Australia. This marks a major milestone on the AUKUS pathway as Australia develops the capability to safely and securely own, operate and sustain conventionally‑armed, nuclear‑powered submarines. The addition of large-vessel infrastructure at the AMC will also revolutionise the surface fleet build and sustainment capabilities. With a continuous naval shipbuilding pipeline secured this year for the first time in the State’s history, the ability to launch and dock the Army’s Landing Craft Medium and Landing Craft Heavy, alongside the Royal Australian Navy’s new General Purpose Frigates and Large Optionally-crewed Surface Vessels, will revolutionise the shipbuilding business in Western Australia. Yesterday, Perth South West was fortunate to have the opportunity to bring together the Mayors and CEOs from the region with Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles to discuss the critical infrastructure needs tied to AUKUS. With the announcement that morning of the planned defence precinct in Henderson, it was the perfect time to discuss how important it is for our region to be prosperous and liveable in order to ensure AUKUS’ success. We covered a broad range of topics including road upgrades, service infrastructure, improved communications, housing plans, and community engagement. The Deputy PM was very receptive to the issues raised, and we look forward to an ongoing dialogue as we work towards solutions that support our region’s growth and future opportunities. #AUKUS #defence #westerntradecoast

Jobs, infrastructure, investment and growth for Cockburn residents and businesses. These are the benefits that excite the City of Cockburn as we welcome the Federal Government’s historic establishment of a Commonwealth-owned Defence Precinct at Henderson. This much-needed development will allow the Henderson shipbuilding precinct to reach its potential as WA prepares to meet the demands of the AUKUS submarine pathway. It will begin with an initial three-year $127m federally-funded planning phase to establish infrastructure including common user facilities to support shipbuilding and sustainment industries in the area. Here’s why it’s good for Cockburn: - Sustainment and maintenance of defence and navy projects at Henderson will create about 3,000 jobs✔️ - Thousands more jobs will support the precinct’s construction and related expansion at HMAS Stirling worth tens of billions of dollars over the next two decades✔️ - It will further increase local businesses involved in the defence supply chain✔️ - Increased export opportunities for local businesses✔️ - A flow-on effect for servicing and maintenance of larger defence and commercial vessels✔️ - Increased opportunities for ancillary businesses like food, accommodation and retail✔️ - Training opportunities in fields such as analytics and robotics, and hopefully a catalyst for expansion of locally-available TAFE courses✔️ - It’s in keeping with Cockburn Council’s 2023 endorsement of a defence and maritime blue economy innovation hub in Henderson✔️ “The multiplier effects will be far-reaching,” Mayor Logan Howlett said. “As a City we are determined to help support our community adjust to the changes ahead as we prepare for the arrival of US submarines in WA in 2027, with their maintenance relying on expertise and facilities not only in Henderson but the wider Cockburn area.” More: https://ow.ly/RjNs50TNfRN #HendersonDefencePrecinct #CityOfCockburn #EconomicDevelopment #BlueEconomy

Front page of today's The West Australian puts it simply, that WA, particularly Perth's South West region, is Australia's home of AUKUS. While there are thousands of jobs to be created through announcements such as this, there is a need for planned infrastructure upgrades over the coming years to ensure that the region can meet Defence's aspirations. #AUKUS #Westport #WesternTradeCoast #FutureofFremantle #ContinuousShipbuilding #Megaprojects
