  • It's Birak, the first summer. The temperature is rising and there are few days of rain. Fledglings have ventured from their nests, but you can hear the familiar cries of young magpies, galahs, and butcherbirds as they squawk to be feed. Reptiles are on the move and shed their old skin. The sky was a brilliant blue and the sea calm as we learned about the important flora and fauna at Woodman Point. Cyril Yarran took us back in time to a magical place and shared knowledge about the plants and animals we saw along the trail. Under a majestic Tuart we heard about its role as nature’s supermarket, including important medicinal qualities. A Quondong tree heavy with fruit caught Cyril’s attention and we learned about the different ways the plant is used. Many questions were asked and answered. Participants enjoyed the Birak Six Season Walk hosted by the City of Cockburn and Perth NRM and we look forward to posting the event details for Bunuru soon at www.perthnrm.com/events/

  • On Tuesday 3 December, 2024, the Swan Alcoa Landcare Program program announced the recipients of the 2025 round of funding, providing over $280,000 to 26 community groups across the Perth region, for projects improving bushland and waterways. Since its inception in 1998, SALP has provided more than $10.7 million in funding to community groups, who in turn have delivered more than 1,730 restoration projects, engaging thousands of volunteers and contributing over 255,000 work hours. This includes weeding on over 8,075 hectares, planting more than 3.1 million plants to revegetate over 3,200 hectares, feral animal control, and the creation of wildlife habitat. • Celebrating a decade of coastal conservation. This year marks 10 years of our partnership with proAlliance (SUEZ/Water Corporation), working together to protect and rejuvenate the Kwinana coastline. Here's what we've achieved together over the past ten years: - 20,000+ native seedlings planting - 800+ kg of marine debris collected - Closure of off-road vehicle access, brushing old tracks - Installing sand trap fencing to reduce windblown sand impacting the desalination plant. - Invasive weed management, including the control of Pyp Grass - Tackling illegal dumping and littering with the City of Kwinana Coastal + Marine Program Manager Vanessa McGuiness says "This coastal reserve serves as a vital ecological corridor along the Kwinana Industrial Area. This dune buffer not only protects the Desalination Plant from coastal erosion, but now has increased biodiversity, creating habitat for quenda and local birds that frequent the area." Thank you again to the volunteers who’ve supported this journey year after year. Special thanks to Karis Tingey for engaging proAlliance's staff with this project! #CorporatePartnerhips #CorporateVolunteering #KwinanaIndustrialArea #CoastalConservation #CoastalErosion #ESG #Kwinana

  • Last week we had the pleasure of hosting TechnipFMC and their fantastic team of volunteers for a coastal Corporate Volunteering Day at C.Y. O’Connor Beach. Together we focused on removing invasive weeds like dune onion weed and pelargonium that were overtaking the revegetation installed earlier this year by the City of Cockburn. To wrap up, we finished with a beach clean-up to remove marine debris from this coastal stretch. Thank you TechnipFMC for helping us make a difference. We hope to see you again! #CorporateVolunteering #EnvironmentalStewardship #CommunityImpact #Weeding #Revegetation #CoastalConservation

  • An amazing group of staff from Vocus joined us last week as part of our Corporate Volunteering program at Brighton Beach (South Scarborough). This is the second time Vocus have volunteered with us and we were thrilled to have them back. In partnership with the City of Stirling (Western Australia) and Stirling Natural Environment Coastcare, we planted over 4000 coastal seedlings into this site over winter – now we are undertaking careful maintenance to ensure the restoration site is thriving. Vocus volunteers removed 36 large bags full of invasive weed species from the site, which was a huge effort for a warm November day, and goes a long way towards ongoing coastal ecosystem restoration in the region. Thanks again Vocus for your enthusiasm and ongoing support!

An incredibly enthusiastic team from Micromine joined us at Trigg Beach last week as part of our Corporate Volunteering Program. With perfect spring weather on our side, their many helping hands made a huge impact. Together, we watered all the newly planted seedlings on-site and removed over 40 bags of invasive species from our restoration areas. These tasks are crucial to do before summer sets in, and will give our coastal native plants the best chance to survive. A big thank you again to Micromine for supporting our environmental conservation projects in the Perth region. #EnvironmentalConservation #CorporateVolunteering #Sustainability #Restoration #NativePlants #Teamwork #CommunityImpact #PerthEvents #CoastalRestoration

  • What a beautiful day to be on the coast! 🌊 Our Coastal + Marine Program Manager Vanessa McGuiness hosted today's Corporate Volunteering Day with the Perth team from Hexagon Mining and longstanding volunteer Mike Ewing from Cottesloe Coastcare. Under Mike's guidance and experience, the team of 10 tackled the weeds invading Cottesloe's dunes such as sea spinach, dune onion weed, rye grass and euphorbia species. In only a few hours, approximately 25 large bags, weighing 350kgs of weeds were removed. Solid effort! Thanks again Hexagon for supporting our coastline and it's community. #CorporateVolunteering #volunteers #coastcare #cottesloecoastcare #weedcontrol #dunecare #Perth #Hexagon #HexagonMining Town of Cottesloe

  • As we head into the warmer months, our coastal restoration sites need regular maintenance and monitoring to ensure seedlings have the best chance for survival. We are grateful to an enthusiastic team of volunteers from Shell Australia, who joined us out on the beach at North Scarborough to spend a few hours watering the thousands of plants that were put into this site over winter. Watering over the first summer will be of huge benefit to long-term conservation outcomes and supports ongoing volunteer effort by Stirling Natural Environment Coastcare. In addition, we cleared weeds from within plant guards and collected a few kilograms of marine debris – solid work for a hot morning out in the dunes. It was fantastic to see a couple of dugites in the site as we worked, which is a testament to the broader ecosystem benefits of restoring coastal habitat. Thank you Shell, for your efforts and support of environmental volunteering in Perth.

  • Perth NRM encourages commitments to our unique natural areas and supports the Bibbul Ngarma Aboriginal Association’s community survey to share your thoughts on the Mandoon Bilya (Helena River). Their BoorYul-Bah-Bilya initiative includes developing a community catchment plan for the river. To learn more and participate in the survey please see below:

🗣️ COMMUNITY SURVEY 🗣️ Please support us by completing our short survey on Mandoon Bilya (Helena River). Your feedback will be used to develop our BoorYul-Bah-Bilya Community Catchment Plan which we hope will lead to: • Increased river health and biodiversity • Protected cultural and historical significance • More access to the river's places for recreation and leisure • Sustainable economic opportunities like eco-tourism The more people complete this survey, the stronger our plan will be, so we want to hear from everyone, even if you've never heard of Mandoon Bilya! https://lnkd.in/gZ67aDjR
