The 2024 Moana Oceania Soil Judging Competition consists of one individual pit and two team pits where participants describe a soil profile individually, and then together in a team, with only 75 minutes in each pit. The descriptions are incredibly detailed and they are marked against how accurate they are against the description completed by a professional soil surveyor. These are very useful skills for scientists working in the agricultural, earth and environmental science sectors to develop which are not taught in this level of detail. The participants spend two days training to become familiar with the local landscape before competing in the competition on the third day. Our team from Victoria, made up of students from the School of Earth, Atmosphere and Environment - Monash Science (Maille Todd, Sarah Tinsley, Ella Lausberg and Julie Tan) and La Trobe Uni (Berenice Della Porta) did a brilliant job describing soils with characteristics which are not found in Australia - such as weathered pumice and allophane. Maille Todd placed third in the individual competition and we won the Bennison Trophy for the best overall Australian University Team! This was a fantastic learning experience and it was great working and co-coaching such an excellent team who worked so well together with Gary Clark. And it was also great to bring back the Bennison Trophy as the previous winners #SoilJudgingAusNZ

While my Element Sets project (http://elementsets.net) has technically "finished", I'm still getting the occasional late order come in from schools where teachers or lab techs have only just heard about the project. Luckily I have enough leftover samples & funds to fill these requests (so far) - this one's off to a school in the ACT tomorrow. SAEF’s 2024/2025 Antarctic field season has begun! This season, over 40 SAEF students and staff are heading south on expeditions designed to deliver the science and future workforce required to address the region’s most urgent challenges. SAEF expeditioners will reach more areas of the continent than ever before, with teams heading to the Holtedahl Mountains in Queen Maud Land, the Denman Glacier, Bunger Hills and Shackleton Ice Shelf in Wilkes Land, the Morozumi Mountains in North Victoria Land and the Antarctic Peninsula. Our first PhD student, Charlotte Patterson from QUT (Queensland University of Technology), reached the Antarctic Peninsula in mid-November, and two further PhD students, Madison Farrant and Noemie Sheppard from Monash University, are in Chile awaiting departure. We then have two more teams heading south over the weekend to the Holtedahl Mountains through White Desert's science support program and the Morozumi Mountains with Antarctica New Zealand. Thrilled to share that I have been promoted to Senior Peer Mentor for the Monash Science Faculty at Monash University Over the past year, I’ve committed more than 60 hours to this role, mentoring and guiding students as they navigate their university journey. Seeing them grow in confidence, find their sense of belonging, and approach their degrees with renewed ambition has been incredibly rewarding. This experience has not only allowed me to make a meaningful impact on others but has also taught me so much about leadership, empathy, and the value of community. Our PhD students from the School of Earth, Atmosphere and Environment - Monash Science have spent the last 2 days training and learning about the soils in the Rotorua region of New Zealand at the 2024 Moana Oceania Soil Judging Competition and hearing from the soils and geomorphology experts on the region. The soils we saw were influenced by up to 5 volcanic eruptions, each one burying the underlying profile, making for some challenging profiles. Our team will get to put it all together for the competition soil pits tomorrow #SoilJudgingAusNZ
