A global study led by Monash University has identified significant gaps in antimicrobial knowledge among undergraduate students in medicine, pharmacy, nursing, dentistry, and veterinary fields. This highlights an urgent need to strengthen education on antimicrobial resistance and its environmental impact. Antimicrobial stewardship — responsible use of antibiotics, antivirals, antifungals, and antiparasitics — is essential to protect planetary health by preventing contamination of soil, animals, and waterways. Dr Angelina Lim, Deputy Pharmacy Course Director at Monash, emphasises that combating the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance requires a solid understanding of inappropriate antimicrobial use and training in proper medicine disposal. Co-lead author Shahd Alzard, a Monash PhD candidate and hospital pharmacist, hopes the findings inspire expanded antimicrobial stewardship education across disciplines. This would reinforce Monash University’s commitment to advancing planetary health education and preparing a healthcare workforce equipped to tackle antimicrobial resistance. We recently hosted an inspiring evening at our “Navigating and Building a Thriving Career in the Pharmaceutical Industry” event, where alumni and students gathered for a night of engaging conversations and networking opportunities. Monash PharmSci Alum Dr. Shaz Sivanesan was an exceptional moderator, guiding an engaging discussion on career pathways in pharmaceutical science. Her engaging “hot seat” questions added a layer of depth to the responses from the panellists. Our panel featured Monash PharmSci alum Dr Aaron DeBono and Dr Rohan Volpe, each offering unique insights from their careers in academia, industry, and beyond. Thank you for contributing to an evening filled with networking opportunities and valuable insights into the diverse career pathways that Monash alumni are pursuing in pharmaceutical sciences. We look forward to hosting more PharmSci alumni events and welcome suggestions for future topics.

Resilience is an essential psychological trait, empowering people to adapt and thrive in the face of challenges. A new study, led by Monash Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, compared how resilience is directly related to academic performance across two groups of pharmacy students: school leaver undergraduate learners, and mature age graduate entry learners. The goal of the study, published in BMC Medical Education, was to identify strategies to help Australia’s future pharmacy workforce build resilience in today’s fast-paced healthcare workplaces. Led by Dr Betty Exintaris and Dr Angelina Lim, you can read more about the outcomes from the study here: https://lnkd.in/gJjT9gdv #MonashUni #MonashPharm #ChangeIt
