Its suitable for anyone using surveys for data collection regardless of discipline or practice area. On day one (FRIDAY 2nd of AUGUST) we go through how to write survey questions and corresponding response options, ethical considerations, sampling and recruitment and setting up an online survey. We design a survey together on day one and then distribute it so we can see how our questions and response options work in data analysis. Day two (FRIDAY 9th of AUGUST) focuses on data entry and coding, analysis of the survey designed on day 1, reporting of results, typical pitfalls and an opportunity to discuss your own survey. Last year I was invited to provide expert review for a publication being prepared by the 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗢𝗯𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗻 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘀 (𝗡𝗔𝗢), commissioned by the Public Health Agency of Canada | Agence de la santé publique du Canada The Rapid Review examined Public Health System Performance Indicators in Australia, the UK and the US. They wanted to identify and learn from comparable countries to support the development of public health system performance indicators in Canada. The review - led by Sara Allin and others from NAO - is now published and available here: https://lnkd.in/gdEXfm3m They found four performance frameworks considerations: 🎯 Integrate the monitoring of health outcome measures with public health structure (e.g. public health workforce) and process (e.g the delivery of high-quality, equitable public health programs and services) indicators. ✍ Increase the availability of data and public reporting. This will draw attention to the importance of public health systems, while also strengthening accountability for ongoing system improvements. 👨‍👨‍👧‍👦 Integration and collaboration. E.g. Integrate equity targets as part of the measures being assessed. Collaborate with community and stakeholders in the selection and monitoring of these targets. 💡 Tailor strategies to local contexts. E.g. Apply public health performance monitoring frameworks flexibility to address regional needs and priorities. However, don't forget to maintain some level of comparability at a national level! There is still so much variation between and within countries in they way we monitor public health system performance. I will be interested to see how Canada frames their new public health performance monitoring framework, and what we (Aus, UK, US) can potentially learn from them!

#RESEARCH RESEARCHERS AND YOUTH CO-DESIGN TWO WELL-RECEIVED RESOURCES says new research from the Matilda Centre. The paper, published in Health Promotion Journal of Australia, reviewed two public health resources developed by researchers, young people, experts and digital creators. The team worked together to co-design these digital public health resources for young people. The September 2024 issue of the Journal of Primary Health Care, the free open access peer-reviewed research journal of The Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners from CSIRO Publishing is now out. The current state and future challenges of rural health in Aotearoa New Zealand is a focus of this issue, being addressed by our two guest editorials covering academic rural health (Nixon University of Otago) and a norm-critical approach to rural health inequities (Eggleton The University of Auckland). Rural health remains a priority for the coalition government with the launch of a number of initiatives, notably a national rural telehealth service. It is therefore timely that we are publishing two linked studies (Reid & Moerenhout University of Otago) addressing how virtual consultation services, such as telehealth, can be assessed from an ethical perspective. The issue also contains our usual mix of research papers, including a suite of papers addressing sexual health-related matters.

A recent evaluation of our Advance Care Planning workshops, Advance Care Planning Workshops Evaluation Report 2024, showed that they were instrumental in enabling individuals to complete the Advance Health Directives (AHDs) correctly. Authored by Professor Davina Porock, ECU; Gertrude Phiri, ECU; Emma Gunner, ECU; and Philip Bafile, UWA, the report identified that the workshops gave substitute decision-makers confidence in enacting the AHD for their loved ones, leading to increased satisfaction with end-of-life care and reduced stress and anxiety. Additionally, a completed AHD fostered harmony among family members because the document clearly stated the individual’s preferences and was easy to follow. AHDs helped healthcare professionals provide seamless care and led to fewer unwanted healthcare procedures and hospitalisations. Cooperative Research Australia recently released the report from their National Innovation Policy Forum, which was held in Canberra late last year. The forum brought together Australian innovation leaders from business, research and boundary-spanning entities that foster industry-research collaboration with policymakers and parliamentarians to tackle common challenges. A number of discussions centred around the importance of collaboration between industry and university research. Several of the key themes covered on the day we think about at CAA, like how companies can scale in Australia and how we can build efficient frameworks for innovation so companies want to stay here as well as move here. A common sentiment amongst participants was that universities tend not operate in ways that work for industry. This is often driven by slower university timeframes, and differing KPIs compared to industry. It was emphasised that these differences must be bridged if industry and academia are going to be able to best collaborate for innovation going forward. It’s pleasing to see that changes are happening, albeit slowly, as this is of great importance to the cell ag sector in Australia—for the sector to thrive, all parts of the innovation ecosystem, including academia and industry, must work together. Excellent submission from Science in Australia Gender Equity (SAGE) on how research funding can drive gender equity! Funders have a lot of power in shaping what sort of research gets funded and who does that research. It's time for funders to be not only more gender-aware but to use their funding levers to advance equity.

✊🏽Differentiated HIV Testing Services should be compassionate, non-judgmental, and follow the preferences of the person in need of the service. This was the general consensus by the Community Advocacy Network (CAN) and Community Advocacy Network Advisory Group (CAN AG) during the pre-meeting held on 9 July 2024 in collaboration with ITPC and ICAP at Columbia University. The CAN advocated for privacy and confidentiality within HIV testing services and linking pre-test and post-test counselling as communities are facing challenges due to this disconnect. #HIV #DSD #differentiatedservicedelivery #HIVtesting

Final days to register to attend the Introductory session of the Australian Evaluation Society's first 'Evaluation Lab' - led by the Design and Evaluation Special Interest Group (DESIG). What is this Lab I hear you ask? Well, let me tell you! DESIG have pondered how we can mix things up this year. We've decided that it's time for the evaluation sector to get hands on, and come up with some solutions to the different challenges we face in our work! I'm not talking about the challenges those we work with face, I'm talking EVALUATION challenges. We're going to use design to help us identify some solutions. This is not a one-off event. Rather, this session is an open invite to 'sign up' to the Lab. There are four subsequent sessions that are 'closed' and only available to those participating. You will form a 'design team' (2-5 people) - perfect for a team or group within an organisation, or sole traders to collaborate. Over the course of three or so months, you will be taken through the design process to identify solutions. Then, the pitch! This is a free event - who doesn't love some free professional development? And a chance for you to learn the detail about design thinking in a safe, and fun, space! Want a value-add? I'm only the host, the awesome Christian Duell (design facilitator extraordinaire) will present the content and activities. You don't need to be an AES member, or even an 'formal' evaluator. So if you are a 'sole' evaluator in an organisation, grab some colleagues and form a team! I should add - this is COMPETITIVE - after all, why have a pitch if we can't treat it a bit like Shark Tank? More on that end of things to come. You have nothing to lose, and free PD to gain by signing up. Give it a go, and bring a friend! I would think that certain groups could encourage some colleagues to put forward a team - what's a bit of friendly competition between evaluators? Given the current conjuncture, this symposium aims to move beyond timid framings of diversity that have not worked for media practitioners or scholars, and therefore calls for ‘divesting from diversity’.   This pre-conference event takes a transnational approach to framing diversity debates in the media, how these are limiting (and limited), and what decolonial and anti-colonial alternatives could look like. How might we divest from the diversity paradigm, and what might take its place? Where are alternatives to be found, and/or how might they be built? Who is doing the work and what solidarities might be needed? The #ICUH conference is coming up fast (next week!). I will be talking about how a multidisciplinary approach closes the knowledge-to-action gap accelerating climate action to protect urban, and rural, health. New Zealand has just released its first Health National Adaptation Plan https://lnkd.in/gg_-i_ee . It says "Social and environmental determinants of health shape community resilience and adaptive ability. Well-designed actions by sectors such as housing, transport, urban development, and agriculture offer considerable opportunities to reduce greenhouse gases as well as to achieve co-benefits to health". Given the strength of current evidence and opportunities to collaborate, I would add the nature-based design sector, landscape architecture, also. Climate change affects health systems in obvious and less obvious ways. Holistic nature-based solutions can address climate-related health issues, impact cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease and diabetes, depression and anxiety. Climate action for health requires proven, innovative and cost-effective strategies to protect and promote health equity. I will be discussing how we can reduce stress and hence incidence of non-communicable disease, use climate adaptive design to protect and promote health and wellbeing into communities.
