The 2024 RAC Ignite Leadership Program has officially come to a close, and what an incredible journey it has been 🎉 Our finalists presented their inspiring ideas to a new judging panel, and we are proud to announce Matthew and James as this year’s winners. Their innovative pitch tackles the challenge of road navigation skills among WA youth through a unique app leveraging RAC GO’s infrastructure. By gamifying routes, the app aims to enhance spatial awareness, promote outdoor activity, and improve road safety education while aligning with RAC’s values of sustainability and community connectivity. A sincere thank you to Millennium Kids for their partnership in facilitating this impactful program, and to our valued stakeholders who contributed to its success. We look forward to supporting Matthew and James as they take the next steps to bring their idea to life—creating safer, more connected communities in WA. 🌟 Exciting News! 🌟   We are proud to announce that the article, "Regeneration Time: Ancient Wisdom for Planetary Wellbeing," by Professor Anne Poelina, Sandra Wooltorton, Mindy Blaise, Catrina Luz Aniere, Pierre Horwitz, Peta White, and Stephen Muecke, has won one of the two Manuscript Excellence Awards for AJEE for 2024! 🎉   "Regeneration Time: Ancient Wisdom for Planetary Wellbeing" explores the integration of ancient Aboriginal wisdom with contemporary environmental education. The authors highlight the importance of postqualitative research in understanding the sentient nature of life and the interconnectedness of people, place, and planet. Over the past few weeks, I’ve been part of the RAC Ignite Leadership Program, a fantastic program empowering young change-makers to tackle WA’s biggest challenges. My team - Erika Teng Gui, Lucy Jakob-Boyle, and I - are thrilled to share that our project, Canopy Connect, has made it to the final! What’s Canopy Connect? Inspired by integrated transport systems around the world, we’re addressing something Perth is missing: seamless connections between active transport routes and public transport stops. Our solution combines tree-lined walkways and green-roofed bus shelters to: 🌳 Provide shade and cooling for commuters. 🍃 Improve air quality and foster biodiversity. 🚶♀️ Make walking, cycling, and public transport more attractive alternatives to car use. Our pilot project focuses on Canning, with just 9.9% canopy cover - one of the lowest in Perth. By creating these shaded, sustainable routes, we aim to demonstrate how urban greening can transform WA’s transport landscape into a more sustainable and better connected future. The RAC Ignite Leadership Program has been another year of 'Sparks Flying' in the words of Ben Kent, this program has seen young people start to understand how we together make a safer, more sustainable and better-connected WA! The young leaders are currently working on their project and pitch, with the final 3 pitching at the Celebrate Event to a panel of judges who will decide the projects that will get 1st, 2nd and 3rd. At Millennium Kids we co-designed the program to ensure our 'Skills for Life' framework and 21st Century Thinker models are weaved throughout to ensure that participants have the skills they need to be a change maker and go into there next journey with the skills to succeed.
