About us
The McCusker Centre for Citizenship at the University of WA was established with a generous donation from the McCusker Charitable Foundation in 2015. The Centre collaborates with students and the broader UWA community, not-for-profit, community, government and business organisations to make a difference in our communities locally, nationally and globally. Through its award-winning Internship Program, the McCusker Centre for Citizenship has placed more than 2,800 undergraduate and postgraduate UWA students with over 400 not-for-profit, community and government organisations to deliver in excess of 290,000 hours of service to the community. The Centre also hosts events and forums, facilitates academic units, and offers UWA students international opportunities including the Pollinate Student Fellowship program in India.

“Beacon is a cyber safety education app, designed to keep parents and carers up to date with reliable and valuable information to help keep their kids safe online. My role involves writing new articles that align with current and emerging social media platforms, laws relating to social media, including Australia’s newly passed age restrictions, and ensuring the existing content on the app is relevant and current.” Lilly recently shared with us about what she’d been working on during her Summer internship with The Kids Research Institute Australia - great work Lilly! “My internship revealed to me the critical role Activ plays in addressing barriers to inclusion in WA, from housing and employment, to social stigma; I learned how Activ empowers people with disabilities by fostering independence and creating opportunities. The highlight of the internship was the conversations I had with those around me; they generously shared their experiences, offering insights I can use in the future, and helping me navigate the responsibilities in my role more effectively.” Through his 100-hour internship, Master of Business Analytics student, Ayaan, supported the Activ Foundation’s merger with national disability services and senior services provider, genU. “I heard about the internship program through a few friends; I felt it was the perfect opportunity to gain experience and add value to the last semester of my degree. It was exciting to see that my contribution had made a tangible difference for the organisation.” Thanks to Alzheimer's Research Australia for hosting Inez in her recent internship. Inez is a Bachelor of Psychology student, who was able to experience a professional environment while learning about the administrative side of research. Some great insights here from internship host, Eamon, and current intern Emmeline, with the Public Sector Commission. Student applications are open now, and so are expressions of interest for hosting an intern in Semester 1. While students don’t start their internship until February, we are already matching students to roles. Find out more 👉 https://lnkd.in/gU9uuzz4
Ready to support the next generation of professionals while gaining fresh perspectives for your team? The McCusker Centre for Citizenship UWA is inviting public sector agencies to apply to host an intern in 2025. McCusker internships connect UWA students with workplaces that have a meaningful impact on the community. The benefits are mutual – interns gain invaluable hands on experience and agencies benefit from innovative thinking and new perspectives. Eamon Dorricott is mentoring the Commission’s current intern Emmeline, and says having Emmeline in the team has been fantastic. “It’s a great way to learn from someone with a different perspective and outlook,” he says. “It’s also provided me with an opportunity to develop my leadership and mentoring skills.” For Emmeline, she wanted to do something that would help with her studies in psychology and commerce and was happy to do some research on the expectations of the younger generation in the workforce. "Everyone has been really welcoming,” she says. “I haven't worked in an office space before, so this has been a good introduction – it’s an interesting experience.” Applications for 2025 are now open. Lilly’s summer internship with The Kids Research Institute Australia has seen her contributing to the Beacon app project, helping parents and carers keep their children safe in online spaces. “My role involves writing new articles that align with current and emerging social media platforms, laws relating to social media, including Australia’s newly passed age restrictions, and ensuring the existing content on the app is relevant and current.” (Read more about Lilly’s internship via the link in her post)
Thank you to the McCusker Centre for Citizenship UWA for featuring my internship experience with The Kids Research Institute Australia. It has been an incredible opportunity to contribute to the Beacon app project. A special thank you to my supervisor, Rachael Heaphy-Scaife, for your guidance and support. I've truly enjoyed collaborating with you and the team. This internship has deepened my passion for research and I'm excited to see where this experience leads. https://lnkd.in/gxmmW2Bb

Sydney is a Bachelor of Business student at UWA, majoring in Business Management and Marketing, who was looking for a way to gain more practical experience as part of her degree. “I was very lucky to be with Luma through the final stages of the creation and brand handover for the HER Board project, which is a sponsorship program to help women experiencing domestic violence leave those situations. One of the highlights of this experience was the opportunity to work with such an incredible group of women, who are so passionate about what they do.” Read more about Sydney’s contribution 👉📰 https://lnkd.in/gDN39xkK We have some amazing roles coming up for interns who want to use their skills to benefit the community in 2025.
