We are proud to be Australia’s largest bird conservation organisation. Join us in our mission to stop extinctions 🦜

About us

BirdLife Australia is Australia’s largest bird conservation organisation and is dedicated to stopping bird extinctions. With our specialised knowledge and the support of a nationwide network of volunteers and supporters, we combine the best of conservation practice and rigorous scientific data and research to protect Australia’s birds and their habitats. We work locally, nationally and globally to drive the recovery of threatened bird populations, restore nature and prevent bird extinctions. When we protect birds, we’re protecting nature too – which we all depend on. To save birds is to save life. Our bold new Bird Conservation Strategy is the blueprint to saving Australia’s birds. Now, our mission is guided by strong, ambitious targets – to stop the extinction of birds by 2030, improve the status of 30% of threatened birds by 2030 and halt overall bird population declines by 2050.

  • 🌳💕All we want for Christmas... is you... to fall in love with Australia's mistletoe! Often mistaken for the European festive variety or thought of as invasive, Australia’s mistletoe has actually been a part of our landscape for millions of years. Boasting over 90 species – more than anywhere else on Earth – this native plant is an ecological powerhouse. It provides food and shelter for many native animals, including the Critically Endangered Regent Honeyeater, while its fallen leaves enrich the soil. We’re planting more mistletoe in places like the NSW Hunter Valley to help these vital ecosystems thrive. Want to learn more or start planting on your land? • Check out these incredible murals created by Year 5–9 students from Kangaroo Island Community Education’s (KICE) Parndana Campus, with support from their dedicated teachers, talented local artists, and BirdLife Australia, as part of the Community and Nature Healing Together after Fire initiative. The Black Summer wildfires devastated the Kangaroo Island/Karta Pintingga community, destroying homes, businesses, and wildlife. These murals capture the island’s recovery and celebrate its wildlife and ecosystems. They will be installed at the newly built 'Club in the Scrub' sporting facility, providing the local community and visitors with a space to enjoy. This project is funded by the Bendigo Bank Community Enterprise Foundation’s South Australia Bushfire Recovery Grant and delivered in partnership with BirdLife Australia, Kangaroo Island Land for Wildlife, KICE, and the Western Districts Community Sports Club. #BirdLifeOz #BirdLifeAustralia #Nature #Birds #Wildlife #Australia #Art #Mural

  • 🌳 Joint Statement: Protect Lutruwita / Tasmania’s Forests 💔 Last week, a Right to Information request by BirdLife Australia revealed alarming plans by the Tasmanian government to open 39,000 hectares of forest to logging. This land, which includes crucial old-growth forests, is home to many threatened species, including the Critically Endangered Swift Parrot. Experts warn that, at its current rate of decline, the Swift Parrot will be extinct within 10 years. This decision represents an unprecedented threat to Tasmania’s unique natural heritage and the species that depend on these forests for survival. Immediate action is needed to protect these irreplaceable ecosystems before it’s too late. 📸 Tile 1 Swift Parrots by Rebecca Citroni #BirdLifeAustralia #Tasmania #BirdLifeOz #Nature #Environment #Conservation #ProtectLutruwita #SaveTheSwiftParrot #StopLogging

  • Help our migratory shorebirds return home not just this summer, but every summer 🌊 Often overlooked in favour of our brighter-coloured bird friends 🦜, migratory shorebirds are just as special, yet sadly, some of the most threatened birds on the planet – and they really need our help. The combined pressures of habitat destruction, disturbance from recreational activities, and rising seas are pushing many migratory shorebird populations into decline. Our National Migratory Shorebirds Coordinator, Dr Lindall Kidd, says, “There’s nothing else more interesting... they connect cultures around the world, and there’s nothing else on land that does that.” 🎁 Give a bird-saving gift this Christmas by donating to support our work protecting and restoring habitats for our migratory shorebirds Donate today: https://lnkd.in/gacxeZ2p 📽️ Sharp-tailed Sandpipers by Darren and Thalia Broughton, Eastern Curlew by GD Smith, Curlew Sandpipers, Terek Sandpiper & Ruddy Turnstone via Getty #Birds #BirdLifeAustralia #Nature #Shorebirds #Conservation #Nature

  • 🚨Alarming news – thanks to a Right to Information request by BirdLife Australia, it’s been revealed that the Tasmanian Government plans to open 39,000 hectares of native forest for logging. The proposed logging sites include old-growth forests and vital habitat for the Critically Endangered Swift Parrot, Tasmanian Wedge-tailed Eagle, and Tasmanian Azure Kingfisher. Logging is one of the biggest threats to the Swift Parrot. With fewer than 500 birds remaining, experts say its extinction is possible within 10 years. “We are watching the extinction of the Swift Parrot in real time. These plans reveal the logging of huge areas of threatened species habitat—plans that the Tasmanian Government sought to prevent from becoming public.” – Sean Dooley, Senior Advisor Public Relations, BirdLife Australia. 🔗Read more: https://lnkd.in/gMnz-E7p 📸 Robert Downer #SwiftParrot #BirdLifeAustralia #Birds #Nature #BirdLifeOz #Tasmania #News #Breaking
