Honoured to meet with His Majesty the King during his recent visit to Australia. The King spoke of the importance of environmental protection and restoration and emphasized Australia’s critical role in addressing the global biodiversity crisis. Australia is globally important for biodiversity, and one of only 17 “megadiverse” countries. And just like that… the final translocation in Mt Gibson Wildlife Sanctuary’s ambitious, decade-long Mammal Restoration Project is complete! The last cohort of Chuditch (Western Quolls) were released late last week, marking the final planned translocation on the project which aimed to return 10 locally-extinct species back to Western Australia’s Wheatbelt. 30 years ago, our wildlife translocation program commenced at Karakamia Wildlife Sanctuary (WA), about an hour east of Perth, with the release of the Brush-tailed Bettong, Brushtail Possum, and Southern Brown Bandicoot. Since then, the translocation program has expanded considerably, seeing 53 populations of 23 mammal species established. Of these species, 16 are nationally listed as threatened, 18 are highly or extremely vulnerable to cat and/or fox predation, and 16 are both threatened and vulnerable to invasive predators. Why did the Red-faced Turtle blush? Because someone loved them enough to travel from the other side of Australia to study them! 🐢  Last month, the team at Yampi Sound Training Area on Dambimangari Country (WA) welcomed Ian Smales, a freshwater turtle expert from Melbourne, to research the Northern Red-faced Turtle. Ian's on a mission to resolve a 180-year-old taxonomic mystery of a specimen collected from somewhere in Western Australia.  After three days of finding only Long-necked turtles (Chelodina burrungandjii), everyone was starting to lose hope but were determined not to send Ian home empty-handed. Luckily, on the final day of his trip, Ian found four Northern Red-faced Turtles 🐢🐢🐢🐢  Ian was able to carefully measure his turtles and take genetics which he can now compare with the type specimen in London. 📷 Northern Red-faced Turtle (Emydura australis/victoriae).
