Together, we aim to address critical challenges in desertification, land restoration, and food and water security within the MENAT region. The session, "From Science to Soil: Mobilising Regenerative Agriculture Research Solutions", will spotlight how the region’s unique expertise in arid and saline environments positions it as a seedbed for innovation in climate-resilient agricultural techniques. By translating research into practical, scalable solutions, we can foster collaboration across sectors and secure a sustainable future. Drylands, home to over 2 billion people and covering 40% of Earth's surface, face significant challenges due to climate change and food insecurity. At #COP16Riyadh, ICARDA hosted a side event titled “Harvesting Hope: Sustainable Desert Farming in Drylands”, which showcased integrated desert farming solutions offering hope for resilience and sustainability in these vulnerable regions. Key insights: 🌱 Dr. Orn Supaphol, Ph.D. , Chief Scientist at Saudi Desert Control, shared insights on Liquid Natural Clay (LNC), a cutting-edge innovation that enhances soil health, reduces water usage by up to 50%, and bolsters resilience against droughts and extreme temperatures. 💧 Dr. Vinay Nangia, Ph.D. Research Team Leader – Soils, Waters, and Agronomy: “In the heart of the desert, where every drop of water is a treasure, sustainable water management is not just a necessity but a promise to future generations.” 🌍 Samantha Kayruz , Sustainability and Impact Director at Goumbook : “The evidence-based, practical strength of regenerative agriculture gives us hope to overcome doubts and turn Integrated Desert Farming Systems (IDFS) into reality, making this region a seedbed of innovation.” 💬 Ambassador Shahira Alwehabi, Water, Food Security, and Climate Change Expert: “If we tackle unsustainable practices together, we take the crucial first step in transforming initiatives into impactful implementation.” At ICARDA we will continue to innovate and collaborate to ensure sustainable and resilient livelihoods in the dry region and beyond.

🌍 Goumbook at COP16 UNCCD : Harvesting Hope with ICARDA Goumbook's MENAT Regenerative Agriculture Programme team joined our partners ICARDA; International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas's session titled: "Harvesting Hope: Sustainable Desert Farming in Drylands". A vibrant discussion on transformative solutions for restoring degraded landscapes, managing water resources, and improving food security by fostering resilience through innovation in dry regions facing climate shocks. The session convened leading experts: Dr Vinay Nangia, Ph.D., Dr Aly Abousabaa, Roula Majdalani, Dr. Bapon Shm Fakhruddin, PhD (GCF), Dr. Orn Supaphol, Ph.D. (Saudi Desert Control), Samantha Kayruz (Goumbook/MENAT Regenerative Agriculture Programme), Dr. Matthew McCabe - KAUST (King Abdullah University of Science and Technology), Dr. Abdallah Abdulrahman Saleh Al Kadri, (Saudi Irrigation Organization), Ambassador Shahira Alwehabi, Abdullah Musabehi ElHendi, (FAO/ MEWA). 🌍 This #WorldSoilDay, the MENAT Regenerative Agriculture Programme joined global leaders at COP16Riyadh to highlight soil health and sustainable land management as vital solutions for addressing climate, food security, and land restoration challenges: 🌱 Riyadh Global Drought Resilience Partnership: Launched by Saudi Arabia with over $12 billion pledged, this initiative aims to combat the growing global threat of droughts by fostering resilient ecosystems and sustainable water management strategies. 🌱 NENA Investment Framework Launch: As part of the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, the framework is aimed at optimising funding and implementing land restoration projects across the Near East and North Africa region, with participation from regional leaders, including FAO Goodwill Ambassador Princess Basma Bint Ali of Jordan. 🌱 Food Systems Integrated Programme: A joint global initiative by FAO and International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) at the COP16 Summit spanning 32 countries, supporting sustainable agrifood systems, crops, aquaculture, livestock, and commodities. These developments reaffirm the urgency of addressing soil health and land restoration to tackle global challenges.
