A heartfelt gratitude to Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) for organizing this important event!
The 1st International Mangrove Conservation and Restoration Conference, organised by Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD), gathered over 500 global experts to address critical challenges and best practices in mangrove conservation. Goumbook, in partnership with the Global Mangrove Alliance (GMA), organised a workshop on “Laying the Foundations for a MENA Regional Knowledge Hub”. Facilitated by Benjamin Christ (GMA) and Anuradha Bhattacharya (MENA Oceans Initiative, Goumbook), the session also featured keynote remarks from Nigel Topping, CMG (Ambition Loop) and Tatiana Antonelli Abella. Regional stakeholders participated by sharing their priorities and needs, contributing valuable insights to shape the Hub’s strategy. The hub aims to align with the GMA’s Global Learning Strategy being led by Elena Roddom (Wetlands International); while Nessrine Alzahlawi (Abu Dhabi Mangrove Initiative) reinforced the importance of coordinated, localized restoration approaches. Key Outcomes: ▶️ Science-led Restoration: Balanced national restoration targets with ecosystem integrity. ▶️ Data Sharing: Advocated for transparency and mandatory data sharing policies. ▶️ Decision Support Tools: Highlighted the need for tools to guide restoration decisions. ▶️ Financing: Addressed challenges in understanding financing terminology and identifying creative financing mechanisms. ▶️ Eco-Tourism Impact: Discussed eco-tourism’s role in financial sustainability. ▶️ Community Engagement: Emphasized involving local communities and youth in restoration efforts. Looking ahead, the MENA Regional Knowledge Hub will bridge gaps, share expertise, and support the global objective to halt mangrove loss, double protection, and restore half of the world’s lost mangroves by 2030.
