H.E. Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, and H.E. Samuel A. Jinapor, Ghana’s Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, have signed a $30 million partnership agreement and letter of intent that supports nature-based community development and climate solutions, with initial investment areas identified. Commenting on the partnership, H.E. said: "Our partnership with Ghana is a testament to the UAE’s focus on global biodiversity, climate, and development goals. It underscores our commitment to the UAE Consensus which calls for the ending and reversal of deforestation by 2030 and highlights the importance of protection and preservation of biodiversity. Our investment in Ghana will not only bolster the country's afforestation efforts but will also create a broader positive impact on local communities." The framework document sets out six investment areas , including biodiversity, reforestation, agroecology, gender equality, youth empowerment, and measurement, reporting, and verification indicators for reducing emissions from deforestation. #MOCCAEUAE #YearofSustainability #TodayforTomorrow

Mini-grids can raise ambition in meeting 1.5c targets in emerging economies, reduce fx pressures from diesel and petrol imports that power the millions of off-grid generators that meet the energy demand (often at higher costs) to the poor and marginalised. Layered on this, mini-grids 💡- homes, learning & educational experiences. 🏭- runs businesses, micro factories etc for productive uses. 💳 - increases incomes & improves livlihoods 🚺 - reduces pressures on women & children 🥘- replacing biomass cookstoves with electric/rLNG raises ambition on cooking experience and reduces impact on native forests and fragile ecosystems where charcoal and fuel wood is sourced without tracking. Improve balance of payment positions for emerging economies.

The journey to carbon neutrality and decarbonization framework of Lagos is in motion. Very fortunately, the government of Lagos is focused on working with partners such USAID, RMI, C40, UN Habitat etc. to achieve landmark objectives. In the room today was a brain storming session with colleagues from the partner agencies, Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and the Lagos Waste Management Authority. The short term strategy is to account for Lagos organic wastes in the upstream, determine environmental friendly strategies in handling organic wastes treatment in the midstream while projecting sustainable off taking routes at the downstream sector for end product of Lagos organic wastes.

The Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA) + World Bank recently launched the Carbon Market Guidebook for Kenyan Enterprises. It aims to provide step-by-step guidance for Kenyan enterprises in various #industries including; agriculture, waste environment, forestry, trade, banking, insurance, manufacturing, energy, transportation, construction and hospitality, to navigate the complex and fast-evolving landscape of #carbonmarkets. When l received this Guidebook, l had to face the hard reality that now was the time to carefully dissect this ginormous, long-avoided, mystery-shrouded concept called sijui carbon credits, ati carbon markets, and make it palatable for me. I am glad to share below (with my ilk 🤭), some new-found fundamental info on carbon markets: ♻️ The Kyoto Protocol of 1997 + Paris Agreement of 2015 are international accords that laid out international greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions goals which mandated national emissions targets. With these new regulations in force, the pressure on businesses to find ways to reduce their carbon footprint grew⬆️ . ♻️ What are #greenhousegases (GHG)? They are gases in the earth’s atmosphere that trap heat & make the planet warmer. The gases act like the glass walls of a greenhouse – hence the name, greenhouse gases. Without this greenhouse effect, temperatures would drop to as low as -18˚C; too cold to sustain life on earth🌍 . Scientists agree dramatic increase in release of greenhouse gases are the cause of #globalwarming and #climatechange. Human activity has displaced the natural balance. ♻️ Examples of GHG: Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the most primary gas. Others are: methane, nitrous oxide and water vapour. ♻️ CO2 is now tracked and traded like any other #commodity. This is known as the "carbon market." What the carbon markets do is turn CO2 emissions (CO2e) into a commodity by giving it a #price. ♻️ Two primary types of carbon markets: ▪️Compliance markets are regulated and include #carboncredits (carbon allowances). 1 carbon credit represents 1 ton of CO2e. When a company buys💰 a carbon credit, usually from the government, they gain "a permission slip" to generate one ton of CO2e. ▪️Voluntary markets entail the carbon offsets, which flow horizontally, trading carbon revenue between companies. Organizations with operations that reduce the amount of CO2 already in the atmosphere, like afforestation or renewable energy, have the potential to be quantified as #carbonoffsets that can then be traded. ♻️ Carbon credits + carbon offsets are created through projects/activities aimed at reducing #emissions. Projects must follow established methodologies and undergo verification by accredited 3rd-party organizations. Verification ensures that the emission #statistics are real & verifiable. ♻️ In Sept. 2023, the Climate Change Act, No.11 of 2016 (Laws of Kenya) came into law to provide express regulation of carbon markets in #Kenya. Ways to Develop Partnerships in Agriculture for Africa through a Climate-Smart Strategy Lens As we navigate the challenges of #climate change, fostering #partnerships in agriculture becomes paramount for Africa’s sustainable development. There are effective ways to build strong collaborations in the Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) space: #Multi-Stakeholder Engagement: Collaborate with governments, NGOs, research institutions, farmers, and private sector entities. Jointly design and implement CSA initiatives that address climate resilience and food security1. Invest in #Research and #Innovation: Allocate resources to research CSA technologies, drought-resistant crop varieties, and sustainable practices. Innovations drive productivity and climate adaptation1. #Capacity Building: Train farmers, extension workers, and policymakers on CSA techniques. Empower them with knowledge about climate-smart practices and adaptive strategies1. Climate-Resilient #Infrastructure: Develop and upgrade irrigation systems, storage facilities, and transportation networks. These investments enhance agricultural productivity and resilience against extreme weather events1. Financial Mechanisms: Establish climate-smart financing options. Risk-sharing funds, insurance products, and microloans can support smallholder farmers in adopting CSA practices1. #Data-Driven Decision-Making: Leverage analytics tools to monitor climate patterns, soil health, and crop performance. Data informs adaptive strategies and resource allocation12. Promote #Agroforestry: Encourage tree planting and sustainable land management. Agroforestry enhances soil fertility, carbon sequestration, and biodiversity1. Let's nature trees after growing them. #Market Linkages: Facilitate access to markets for smallholders. Strengthen value chains, #cooperatives, and digital platforms to connect #farmers with #buyers 1. #Policy Alignment: Advocate for CSA-friendly policies. Incentives, subsidies, and regulations can accelerate adoption and create an enabling environment1. South-South #Cooperation: Promote knowledge exchange among African countries. Share best practices, lessons learned, and successful CSA models1.By implementing the strategies, #Africa can cultivate resilient agricultural systems that thrive in a changing climate. 🌱🌍 #References: 1. The East Africa Carbon Markets Forum in Kampala served as a powerful reminder of the unified global effort against climate change. The forum fostered a dynamic exchange of ideas, facilitating discussions around the evolving landscape of carbon markets. These insightful conversations with diverse stakeholders provided valuable perspectives and opened doors to potential collaborative endeavors in the future. A personal highlight of the event was undoubtedly the opportunity to connect with Sam Davies from Flux. Our conversation delved deeply into the world of ERW, essentially a dedicated exploration of the technology's potential for Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) in Africa. His unwavering passion for ERW, coupled with his extensive experience in the field, was incredibly inspiring. This fruitful discussion ultimately led to the exploration of a potential collaboration between Flux and STACK CARBON on MRV and ERW deployment in Uganda. Engaging with a distinguished group of industry leaders during the event was a truly enriching experience. These included Siddhant Gupta (EKI Energy Services Ltd (EnKing International), Nikita (Offset8 Capital), Héloïse Zimmermann (Nairobi Climate Network), Kabaka Mutensa (BioCarbon Standard ), Tukwatanise Bonnita (Treescape), Ann Maina (Boomitra), Olya (Orbify), Roy (Khala Labs HQ ), Victoria Sibiya (Next Media), and Oğuz Tosun (Climate Balanced ), along with many others. Beyond fostering individual connections, the launch of the Uganda Carbon Markets Association (UCMA) signified a pivotal moment. Witnessing this collaborative effort to propel Uganda's carbon market forward instilled a strong sense of optimism for the future. The East Africa Carbon Markets Forum effectively underscored the importance of collaboration in accelerating progress towards a more sustainable future. A sincere expression of gratitude goes out to Anete Garoza and the 1MTN team for organizing such a well-executed and impactful event.

Join us for the launch of the 4 Returns Guidebook at COP16Riyadh: 11 Dec. 1-2:30 pm at MET-04 Blue Zone   A holistic landscape approach puts local people at the centre and promotes inclusive governance, land stewardship, economic prosperity and resilience -the five pillars of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification. It requires an enabling policy and institutional environment that is open to innovative ways of implementing long-term place-based, systemic thinking, where public funding for holistic landscape restoration is viewed as an investment with multiple returns rather than a cost. Through both stories and practical resources, the guidebook aims to provide landscape practitioners with knowledge, tools and methods needed to achieve land degradation neutrality globally and meet the goals of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration. The guidebook is the result of a collaborative effort led by Commonland, in partnership with Landscape Finance Lab and Wetlands International, and based on 12 years of lessons learned from our landscape colleagues in several countries including Wij.land, AlVelAl, Living Lands, Wide Open Agriculture, Dirty Clean Food, Grounded, Noongar Land Enterprise Group and others. The event aims to foster discussions and explore how this approach can help to overcome challenges of advancing large-scale holistic landscape restoration that are driven by local people with multiple needs. As countries implement their national and sub-national development plans, landscapes can be leveraged to implement adaptation, ecosystem restoration, drought preparedness and other global commitments in a coherent manner.  Excited to join this exceptional panel alongside Luc M.
