Check out Annette Vee’s insightful comparative analysis of historical + emerging technologies for scaled learning! It inspired some thoughts that I hope can continue this urgent public conversation. ==== Vee’s critical inquiry led me to reflect on the implications of AI’s scaled integration into pre-existing learning infrastructures. I especially appreciated that she included MOOCs in her brilliant historical framing of some of the failures of emerging technologies to effectively facilitate teaching + learning. MOOCs are typically considered a failure in most convos about T&L. I rarely hear anything good about mass open education despite the fact that it drew in big dollars for a short while. This effort offered writing tutors like me the opportunity to do remote and hybrid work. It was used to cut costs and acquire considerable profit from Online World Campuses affiliated with prestigious institutions. They were also funded by philanthropists with a vision of democratized education that leverage the abundance of data, reduce the scarcity of knowledge, and better actualize the potential of global connectivity. Vee’s conversation about how students prefer to learn made me want to know more about how researchers have evaluated student satisfaction with MOOCs. Quantitative results would be interesting, but I’m focused on measures of what counts as a MOOC, positive feedback of it, and how much of it exists, even if that number is zero. Such information could further clarify when online learning actually does work in scaled environments even if the degrees of “openness” of the platform are debatable. Example: YouTube and Facebook integrate MOOCs and AI. These are learning environments that are designed for resource exchange. Teachers can literally run classes there. Influencers are effective teachers when they build and engage online communities of any size.

Whiteboard #coding #interviews are a highly debated topic in the tech industry. On one hand, they're a common practice used to assess candidates' problem-solving and communication skills. On the other hand, many view them as an outdated and stressful evaluation method. In next couple of blogs, I will examine both sides of this issue. Note - My viewpoint is skewed towards senior / principal level engineer hiring. First, let's look at why whiteboard coding can be an effective assessment tool: 1 - Communication Skills: Whiteboard interviewing provides insight into a candidate's ability to articulate their thought process, handle feedback, and teach concepts - critical skills for senior engineers. It simulates a collaborative code review session or a PR (pull request), allowing the interviewer to observe how the candidate interacts. 2 - Problem-Solving Abilities: Whiteboard coding tests a candidate's capacity for real-time problem-solving, rather than just their ability to write polished code. This can reveal strengths that may not come across in a take-home exercise or pristine codebase. 3 - Level Playing Field: Whiteboarding removes the advantages of personal toolsets and environment, leading to a more standardized evaluation across candidates. 4 - Time Management: The time-boxed nature of whiteboard interviews assesses how candidates prioritize and execute under pressure - an important skill. 5 - Accounting for Variability in Candidate's Ability: Whiteboard interviews can better account for factors like interview nerves or rustiness that may temporarily impact a candidate's performance. However, the very attributes that make whiteboarding effective also contribute to its polarizing nature. Without careful design and implementation, it can become a flawed and frustrating assessment method. The key is establishing robust guardrails. Some recommendations: 1 - First, create a calibrated, shared understanding of the coding bar across your interview team. 2 - Rigorously test your interview questions to ensure they're appropriately challenging. Can they be solved in 15mins? Do they have multiple solutions? 3 - Provide structured training and mentorship for new interviewers to develop their whiteboarding assessment skills. But most importantly, approach whiteboard interviews with empathy. The best interviewers create an environment where candidates feel supported, not interrogated. They use hints generously and evaluate the full scope of a candidate's abilities, not just their whiteboard performance. In summary, whiteboard coding interviews can be an effective way to evaluate senior engineering talent - if executed thoughtfully. By establishing the right processes and cultivating empathetic interviewers, organizations can maintain a high bar while delivering a positive candidate experience.
