Critical transport infrastructures such as interchanges, long tunnels and bridges represent the most vulnerable environments within a transportation network; they are characterised by limited access/egress points and high volumes of users in close confines. A number of factors must be addressed to ensure maximum safety of both travellers and emergency service personnel; these include emergency preparedness, timely support for the decision-making process, and planning of optimal interventions in emergency management situations. This paper discusses the integration of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) and virtual reality (VR) to support the self-evacuation of travellers and operational procedures of rescue personnel within these environments, focusing on two key aspects of emergency operations: 1) collecting real-time data; 2) improving the timeliness of first responders through efficient provision of the collected data. Testimonials, technical results and recommendations collated from two pilot installations realised within the EU-funded SAVE ME project demonstrate the qualitative and quantitative impact of such an approach on emergency situation management.

Exploitation of wireless sensor data in virtual reality for the provision of comprehensive support to tunnel safety training and emergency management

Twenty years of tunnel incidents have produced more than 700 victims worldwide. In Europe alone, there have been more than 60 road accidents in tunnels. Major tunnels are not immune: Mont Blanc (March 1999), Tauern (May 1999), and Saint Gotthard (October 2001), produced 62 deaths and multiple injuries.
Despite structural and safety systems improvements, a number of factors must be addressed to ensure maximum safety. This paper discusses the integration of wireless sensor networks (WSN) and virtual reality (VR) for through-life support to tunnel safety and emergency operations management.
A WSN system designed for roadside applications is employed for environmental and traffic monitoring, event detection, and indoor localization. Data from the WSN is passed to a VR application. The VR application provides a 1:1 scale 3D model of the locale; allowing the injection and visualisation of detected events, locations, and other relevant information to support training and emergency situations.
The modules presented were implemented and tested during the EU FP7 project SAVEME, which developed a system to detect incidents in transportation hubs and to support optimal evacuation guidance for multiple differently-abled travellers. For tunnel-specific challenges, SAVEME collaborated with the Gotthard Tunnel, CNVVF (Italian National Fire Brigade), and ANAS (Italian National Road Company). Testimonials and results obtained during training and live trials indicate how such a system can improve timeliness and provide responders with valuable additional capabilities in the event of an emergency.

Hence a wealth of information creates a poverty of attention." With more and more information available, in more and more complex forms, the attention window gets smaller. The logical requirement from a user perspective is faster, more reliable, and more contextual delivery of information.
The economic model of supply and demand is, perhaps for the first time, driven by human desire as a result of the sociological aspects of the network. The impact on the economics of the network is one of inversion. "Supply curves slope down instead of up and demand curves slope up instead of down," says Paul Krugman of MIT.
Coupling this effect with the sociology of a self-organizing network -- that is itself subject to multiple dynamic influences -- creates an environment in which the demand for improved access is relentless. This physical demand, in conjunction with load dynamics, creates a spiralling cycle of offered load. More importantly, from a provider perspective, this demand dramatically influences the nature of topological load in the network core. -

The report endeavoured to provide telecom executives with a much-needed potted Internet history followed by some extrapolations of the status quo in order to highlight risks and threats to traditional telco business.
Along the way, the report accidentally predicted all that XaaS stuff you read about in the last few years before it magically metamorphosed into 'the cloud'. OK, I called that whole scenario by the name of 'centernalisation' (for centralised externally) but then I never claimed to be a marketeer! :)
The research behind the report also led to a forecast model of Internet user growth which was pretty much spot on for the 1bn 'user' mark as well as the seeds of the first Internet traffic model to use voice traffic as a proxy for inter-geography data traffic. Gold star to me, I think. ;)
Reading the report back now, there are a number of things that were on the money - and a number that were less so. Regardless, netpressure.com is mentioned here for completeness and as a curiosity from the days of trying to predict Internet directions. Squall
The Storm computational topology is a reasonably well-known open source project previously available on GitHub (via nathanmarz) and now an Apache incubator project. However, despite being very good indeed, Storm is a little heavy if all you want is a mechanism to co-ordinate a computational topology (ie: a graph of discrete functional elements in a software system) and to provide guaranteed end-to-end processing of messages/events/etc. passing through that topology. The Storm computational topology is a reasonably well-known open source project previously available on GitHub (via nathanmarz) and now an Apache incubator project. However, despite being very good indeed, Storm is a little heavy if all you want is a mechanism to co-ordinate a computational topology (ie: a graph of discrete functional elements in a software system) and to provide guaranteed end-to-end processing of messages/events/etc. passing through that topology. Well, that's what we thought and so we wrote 'Squall': essentially a little Storm.
Where Storm is designed to work across multiple distributed nodes - orchestrated and controlled by ZooKeeper for fault tolerance, etc. - Squall is designed to work on a single node; reaching out to other endpoints via REST and other API services. Squall makes heavy use of threads to provide parallel processing of input messages/events/etc.
Currently deployed as the primary computational topology under our Gist project, we will record and post performance figures here later and, who knows, may actually get round to open-sourcing Squall at some time in the future.

Ape provides a data acquisition and reverse engineering capability that allows an organisation and it's entities (eg: clients, groups, users, vehicles, devices, services, etc.) to be reconstructed (or 'aped') simply by listening in to datastreams within the organisation.

GIST
GIST is a concept system currently under proof-of-concept development thanks to research funding from the UK MOD Centre for Defence Enterprise.
GIST is concerned with the software implementation of a novel approach to triaging very large volumes of multi-lingual, multi-source documents based on document content. GIST includes the development and configuration of a computational topology for document handling within which GIST is to be integrated.

GIST is concerned with the software implementation of a novel approach to triaging very large volumes of multi-lingual, multi-source documents based on document content. This phase of GIST delivered on New Years Eve, 2013. It is capable of detecting English keyword equivalents in 54 languages in multiple document formats. Parallel processing in the GIST Computational Topology (A Squall instance) provides strong performance while the use of a search repository allows operators to search in English and retrieve results from documents in multiple languages.

Cascade provides a mechanism through which non-technical users may rapidly compose, and recompose, predefined software objects to address both one-off and ongoing requirements for data acquisition, information handling, analytics, insight development, and reporting. Cascade employs a web-based, Visio-like user interface that abstracts software object complexity into connectable blocks.

The Cascade UI produces JSON instructions that are submitted to the Cascade server in order to dynamically produce the software system designed by the user. The Cascade server dynamically assembles user-selected objects - along user-defined connections - to provide one-off or continuous execution of the user's requirement(s). Cascade handles 'big data' with aplomb: acquiring disparate data at speeds of around 350MB/s (on a basic 2GB/2CPU Linux VM) and triggering end-to-end execution of user defined cascades (software object chains - containing 10 objects of varying complexity in tests to date) in under one second. Repeated demonstration tests proved Cascade running at a rate of 1.3MM events per second on the aforementioned basic VM.
Under contract from the UK Centre for Defence Enterprise, Cascade was conceived and developed to demonstrable alpha status in just four months. Cascade is currently being revised to a cloud-based beta deployment to which selected users will be invited.

SAVEME was an EU FP7 project focused on the integration of sensors, virtual world simulation, and decision support systems to detect incidents and events in critical transport facilities containing large numbers of differently-able members of the public with a view to providing both general and personal evacuation guidance.
I defined, developed, and implemented a fully integrated traveller simulation system - leveraging a graph-based representation of the facility at hand - wherein the…SAVEME was an EU FP7 project focused on the integration of sensors, virtual world simulation, and decision support systems to detect incidents and events in critical transport facilities containing large numbers of differently-able members of the public with a view to providing both general and personal evacuation guidance.
I defined, developed, and implemented a fully integrated traveller simulation system - leveraging a graph-based representation of the facility at hand - wherein the movement and risk to travellers with different abilities were factored into overall evacuation planning. The results of this simulation, which executed in under 1 second for 50 distinct travellers in a 35 node graph, were relayed back to a central decision support system for issuance to mobile and collective herding devices. Results were also used to display 3D traveller avatars and their movements in a virtual world system. This last element required the production of 1:1 scale models of the facilities under test and the implementation of a custom interface for the creation and control of avatars in an existing virtual world product. -
