Processed & Frozen Vegetables Market 🇿🇦 South Africa exports most of it's frozen vegetables to Lesotho, Namibia and Ghana. A report from CEO of the International Fresh Produce Association Cathy Burns in August 2023, confirmed that South Africa’s fresh produce exports are expected to grow by 6,8% in the next five years as the world continues to struggle with the high cost of food, wastage, and the burden of unhealthy diets. The rising awareness of the nutritional and health benefits of frozen foods, such as longer shelf life, less food waste, and retention of vitamins and minerals is also driving the South Africa frozen foods market growth. Frozen food products are affordable and have high margins. However, there are also challenges in the business of frozen products, the quality is not consistent due to manufacturing processing, some consumers do not like the taste of frozen products etc.

Hibarri’s Role in Empowering Farmers by Cutting Out Middlemen in the name of Greater Profit One of the most significant challenges for South African farmers is the loss of profits to middlemen who charge high commissions and make the trade process unnecessarily complicated. A 2022 PwC report found that farmers in South Africa lose as much as 30% of their profits due to the involvement of intermediaries. Hibarri is changing that by allowing farmers to connect directly with buyers. By cutting out the middlemen, farmers can retain more of their earnings and establish long-term, profitable relationships with buyers. One small-scale farmer in the Western Cape reported a 30% increase in net profits within just four months of switching to Hibarri’s platform. 📍 Muizenberg, Cape Town 🪰 nutrisek 👨🌾 Cobus Kotze Cobus has a unique experience in the market, because he is one of the founding members of #AgriProtein, one of the first movers in the #blacksoldierfly industry and still to this day one of the best financed business's out there. We spoke about its huge rise and spectacular fall. The story in a nutshell is that it raised heaps of capital, which it invested in completely groundbreaking #innovation. This included a lot of test-measure-learn feedback loops, which can be costly when there is a lot to figure out. But, that's ok, because they raised some more, until they found a good formula for success. So much so that they started to expand worldwide and at this point lost their identity and their investments stopped generating the cashflow in order to survive. The runway eventually ran out and Agriprotein was no more. This is the very brief story of what happened with Agriprotein. Cobus has learned from this experience and now focuses on developing #modular insect farming systems that can be replicated more easily. His company builds standardized modules, each producing around 5 tonnes of larvae per day. This allows for more controlled growth by adding modules as demand increases. The system is designed to be robust, using simple hydraulics rather than complex robotics. On the #business model, Cobus believes the industry needs to focus more on the fundamentals like feedstock sourcing and reliable production. He sees big potential in using #foodwaste as a feedstock in developed countries to get high value. However, food waste brings contamination risks versus cleaner feedstocks. Cobus recommends #entrepreneurs focus first on securing a low-cost feedstock supply, then choose #technology to match. Centralized breeding with decentralized grow-out hubs is one hybrid model. "Growing Larvae isn't the problem, growing larvae at low cost is" Overall, Cobus is positive on the industry long-term, with increasing need for #sustainableprotein and waste re-use. But he cautions against over-promising, emphasizing the need to prove reliable production. He is keen to use data to sell his product, rather than making wild aspirations. His modular insect farming systems aim to "de-risk" projects for investors by enabling small-scale replication of a working module. I had some lunch at Muizenberg and watched the surfers take the waves. It isn’t a bad life down in South Africa. Bread, cereals most popular foods in Namibia: Bread and cereals were the most purchased foods in the country in August, according to the Namibia Statistics Agency (NSA). In its August Namibia Consumer Price Index (NCPI) report released on Tuesday, the NSA noted that these items also recorded low inflation since August last year. “The food sub-category accounts for 14.8% of the consumer basket in the NCPI. Within the food subcomponent, bread and cereals account for the highest weight of food items that consumers purchase.” According to the report, the second most bought food item was meat, followed by sugar, jam, honey, syrups, chocolate and confectionery. A look at the average retail price of selected products for August showed that people in Zone 1 (the Kavango East, Kavango West, Kunene, Ohangwena, Omusati, Oshana, Oshikoto, Otjozondjupa, and Zambezi regions) paid more for bananas compared to other regions. According to statistician general Alex Shimuafeni, in Zone 1 bananas cost N$31,56 (1kg) and N$29,21 in Zone 2 (Khomas – which is made up of Windhoek only). Consumers in Zone 3 (the //Kharas, Erongo, Hardap and Omaheke regions) paid N$31,38. “Meanwhile, consumers in Zone 3 paid the highest price for pure sunflower oil (750ml) at N$31,32, followed by Zone 2 consumers at N$30,91, while Zone 1 consumers paid the lowest price at N$30,67,” said Shimuafeni. In August, the Khomas region recorded the highest inflation, followed by Zone 1 regions and Zone 3, according to Shimuafeni. Inflation in Khomas was 5.4%, while both zones 1 and 3 recorded 3.9%. Inflation is a decrease in the purchasing power of money, reflected in a general increase in the prices of goods and services in an economy. During the month of August, the core inflation rate stood at 3.8%, while the headline inflation rate was 4.4%. “Core inflation refers to a measure of inflation that excludes certain volatile elements from the overall inflation calculation. These volatile elements typically include food and energy prices, which tend to experience significant price swings due to factors such as weather conditions, geopolitical events or changes in supply and demand,” said Shimuafeni. The housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels component recorded an inflation rate of 4.1%, which is double what was recorded in August 2023 (2.8%).
