LITO B. DIAZ
MASTER TEACHER II
EXPECTATIONS:
Define Linear and Angular Velocity
Find the Area of a Circular Sector
Find the relationship of the following:
Length of an Arc (s)
Radius of a Circle (r)
Radian Measure of a Central Angle (
REVIEW: True or False.
1. A unit circle has a radius unit of 1.
2. When the rotation has been made in a circle is
clockwise the degree form is said to be positive.
3. Quadrantal angles are angles in standard position
with terminal points in any of the quadrants.
4. The coordinates of a terminal point of are ()
5. The point P with coordinates of is on the unit
circle.
INTRODUCTION:
Suppose a circle has a central angle which
intercepts an arc of length regardless of the length
of the radius of the circle, once , then the measure
of the central angle is equal to one radian.

r𝜃 r=
s
 Let be the radius of a circle and the length of an arc
intercepted by central angle
 The radian measure can be found by dividing
by .
That is, =
 The length of an arc (s) can be found by getting
the product of the central angle (in radians) and
the radius of the circle .
That is,
 The radius (r) of a circle can be found by dividing
the length of the intercepted arc (s) by the
measure of the central
 angle
 That is,
Example 1. Find the length of the arc
intercepted by a central angle of measure
3.5 radians in a circle whose radius
Solution: Since the unknown value of the
circle is the length of the arc, we can use the
formula to solve.
s=?
𝜃=3.5 𝑟𝑎𝑑

r = 15
cm.
𝒔=𝒓 𝜽
Thus, the length of the arc intercepted
by 3.5 radians is 52.5 cm.
Example 2. A central angle of 30
intercepts an arc of 4 meters. Find the
radius of the circle.
Solution: In order to apply the relation , we
have to express first 30 in radian measures.
Thus, 30 30 radian. Hence,

The radius of the circle is approximately

76.39 meters.
Example 3. Find the central angle
subtended by an arc 7 m if the radius is 2
m.
Solution. Substituting the given values
in the formula =
= radians
The central angle has a measure of 3.5
radians or 200
Example 4. On a circle of radius 150
meters, find the length of an arc subtended
by a central angle of 80.
Solution. We first express 80 in radians.
Thus, 80 radians.
Using the formula , by substituting, we find

Therefore, the length of the arc subtended

by a central angle of 80 is 209.44 meters.
Exercise 1. Answer the following
problem.
1. Find the number of radians in the central angle
that subtends an arc of 7 m on a circle of
diameter 5 m.
2. Find the radius of a circle on which a central
angle of radians subtends an arc of 80 ft.
3. An automotive tire has a diameter of 30 in. How
many revolutions will the wheel make as the
automobile travels 5,280 ft.?
LINEAR AND ANGULAR
VELOCITY
 Consider a point, say P, moving along the
circumference of a circle O with radius (see
figure a). If P travels a distance of linear units
(inches, feet, miles, meters, and so on) in time
units (hour, minute, second), then is called the
linear velocity of P

P 𝜃 P
O r O r

Figure Figure
If radius swings through angular units
(degrees, radians) in time units, then is
called the angular velocity of P (see
figure b)
Th Greek letter (omega) is usually used to
represent angular velocity.
The angular velocity of a rotating body is
quite often expressed in revolutions per
minute (rpm). This can be easily converted
into a radians per minute, by remembering
that one revolution represents radians.
Since the linear velocity of a point on a
revolving ray is defined to be the linear
distance traveled by the point per unit
of time, , and recall that and the angular
velocity , the linear velocity can be expressed
as a product of the angular velocity and the
radius . That is,
A. Find its angular velocity in radians per
second.
B. Find the speed of the belt that drives
the flywheel.
Solution:
A. Since 50 rpm represents 50(2 radians per
minute,
radians per second.
B. The speed of the belt, if does not slip is equal to
the linear velocity of a point on the rim of the
flywheel. Using the formula:

ft. per second or 20.944 ft. per second.

Example 2. Find the angular velocity in
radians per second of a wheel turning at 35
revolutions per minute (rpm).
Solution:
(1 revolution = 2 radians)

(1 minute = 60 seconds)
Example 3. A boy rotates a stone in a 5-ft
long sling at a rate of 20 revolutions every
5 seconds. Find the angular and linear
velocity of the stone.
Solution: In 5 seconds, the changes by 20()
= 40 rad. So the angular velocity of the
stone is

The distance traveled by the stone in 5

seconds is
)(5 ft) = 200 ft
Exercise 2. Calculate the linear
velocity of an object rotating at an
angular velocity at a distance r from
the center. Express the answers in
centimeters per second.
Exercise 3. Calculate the angular velocity
of a point for the given number of
revolutions and time. Express your answers
in radians per minute.
Area of a Circular Sector
A sector of a circle is the part of the interior of the
circle cut by a central angle whose area is given
by the formula

where is the radius of the circle.

𝜃 Are
r a
Example 1. Find the area of a sector of a
circle whose central angle is 75 and the
radius of the circle is 4 cm.
Solution.
75 rad degree to radian = (
Example 2. What is the area of a sector
with radius 4 m intercepted by a central
angle of .

whose radius is 8 dm and subtends an
angle of .
2. The area of the circle is . Find the area
of a sector of this circle that subtends a
central angle of rad.

of 60 and an area of . What is the radius
of the circle?
