 STIs (they used to be called STDs or sexually transmitted diseases) are infections that can
be spread during sexual contact (vaginal, anal, oral sex). Some infections like herpes and
warts can also be transmitted by skin to skin contact.

 Common STIs include- Using condoms and getting tested

 -chlamydia are the best methods of prevention.
 -HIV/aids
 -Herpes
 -syphilis
 -Thrush
Chlamydia
 The most common STI especially in young people.
 Is spread through sex without a condom.
 Can be easily treated with the assistance of a doctor.
 May not show any symptoms
 For guys- You may notice a burning pain when urinating, whitish discharge coming from
your penis, or irritation or soreness around the urethra (opening of the penis).
 For girls- You may notice burning or pain when urinating, an unusual vaginal discharge,
pain in the lower belly, unusual bleeding or spotting from the vagina, or pain or bleeding
after sex

 If left untreated it may lead to infertility.

H.I.V/AIDS
 The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a virus that causes HIV infection and over time
acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).
 HIV/aids is spread via the transmission of the following bodily fluids. Blood, Semen, Pre-
seminal fluid, Rectal fluids, Vaginal fluids and Breast milk. Therefore sex and needle sharing
are the most common methods of transmission
 There is no cure for HIV there is however treatment to prevent the condition from worsening.
 Symptoms include soreness, weakness, fevers, white spots on the tongue and pain.
 Aids eventually leads to severe weakening of the immune system which can then lead to
death. However with proper treatment and management people can still live a relatively
healthy life

HERPES
 Genital herpes sores usually appear as one or more blisters on or around the
genitals, rectum or mouth. The blisters break and leave painful sores that may take
weeks to heal.
 Herpes can be spread through by skin-to-skin contact and can be transmitted
during vaginal, oral or anal sex.
 You can get herpes by having vaginal, anal, or oral sex with someone who has the
disease.
 Fluids found in a herpes sore carry the virus, and
contact with those fluids can cause
infection.
 There is no cure for herpes.
Syphilis
 Syphilis has so many possible symptoms, many of which look like symptoms from
other diseases. The painless syphilis sores are easy to miss. There is non-itchy body
rash and numerous other symptoms.
 Syphilis can be spread through unprotected sex.

 syphilis can be cured with the right antibiotics from your health care provider.
However, treatment will not undo any damage that the infection has already done.
 If left untreated syphilis can have severe consequences including blindness, loss of
bodily functions and even death.
THRUSH
 Vaginal thrush, also known as vaginal yeast infection. Vaginal thrush is very
common and about three in four women will have at least one episode of thrush at
some point during their life.
 Thrush is easily diagnosed by a doctor and easily treated.
 Symptoms can include itching, soreness and irritation, vaginal discharge
 pain during sex or while passing urine.
