STRENGTH OF MATERIALS

Mechanics of Deformable Bodies

BY:
DIVINA R. GONZALES
•MECHANICS OF DEFORMABLE BODIES- Study
of the relationship between externally applied
loads and their internal effects on deformable
bodies.

RIGID BODY – Bodies which neither change in shape and

size after the application of forces
FREE BODY DIAGRAM – Sketch of the isolated body
showing all the forces acting on it.

THREE MAJOR DIVISIONS OF MECHANICS

•Mechanics of Rigid Bodies – Engineering Mechanics
•Mechanics of Deformable Bodies – Strength of Materials
•Mechanics of Fluids – Hydraulics
SIMPLE STRESS TENSILE STRESS AND COMPRESSIVE STRESS

STRESS – unit strength of the body

Where:

S S – Uniform internal stress
P – Axial force

lighting system that can be carried by the two
wires shown if the allowable stress on wire AB is
155MPa and on wire AC is 125MPa given that the
cross sectional areas of wire AB is 70mm2 and
that of AC is 50 mm2.

areas of members BE, BF and EF of the given
truss shown, if the allowable stress in tension
