What is Microsoft Surface?
• Microsoft Surface is a revolutionary
multi-touch computer.
• It responds to natural hand gestures
and real-world objects,
• People can interact with digital
content in a simple and intuitive way.
• With a large, horizontal user
interface, Surface offers a unique
gathering place where multiple users
can collaboratively and
simultaneously interact with data and
each other.
OVERVIEW
• Milan is the code name of
Microsoft Surface.

• Surface turns an ordinary

tabletop into a vibrant, dynamic
surface.

• Manipulating digital content

using hand gestures, motions
and physical objects .

• It has the ability to recognize

physical objects that have
identification tags like bar
codes.
HISTORY
2001: Microsoft researchers Steve Bathiche and Andy Wilson
developed idea of interactive table that could understand the
manipulation of physical pieces.

2003: 1st prototype model named T1which is based on an IKEA

table was born. Team saw the value of the surface computer
beyond simply gaming and began to favor those applications
that took advantage of the unique ability of Surface to recognize
physical objects placed on the table.
2005 :Attention turned
HISTORY (CONT…) to its form factor- Tub
proto type was
designed.

2007:Final structure
finalised,interactive
tabletop device was
built that seamlessly
brings both the physical
and virtual worlds into
one.
Key capabilities of Microsoft
Surface….
• Direct interaction. Users can
grab digital information with
their hands and interact with
content on-screen by touch and
gesture – without using a
mouse or keyboard.
• Multi-user experience. The
large, horizontal, 30 inch
display makes it easy for
several people to gather and
interact together with Microsoft
Surface - providing a
collaborative, face-to-face
computing experience.
• Multi-touch. Microsoft
Surface responds to many
points of contact
simultaneously - not just from
one finger, as with a typical
touch screen, but from
dozens of contact points at
once.
• Object recognition. Users
can place physical objects on
the screen to trigger different
types of digital responses –
providing for a multitude of
applications and the transfer
of digital content to mobile
devices.
STRUCTURE

1. Multi touch Surface

2. 5 Infrared sensors
3. Standard PC’s with
Vista
4. DLP Projector
How it works…………
• Multi touch technology

• Microsoft Surface is based on the

Windows Vista SP1 operating system

• It has a 360-degree user interface

• 30-inch reflective surface with a XGA

DLP projector underneath the surface
which projects an image onto its
underside

• Four cameras in the machine's

housing record reflections of infrared
light from objects and human
fingertips on the surface.
• The surface is capable of
Object recognition
Object/finger orientation
recognition.
Tracking
Multi-touch
Multi-user

• Users can interact with the

machine by touching or dragging
their fingertips and objects such
as paintbrushes across the
screen, or by placing and moving
placed objects.

• This paradigm of interaction

with computers is known as a
Natural User Interface(NUI)
• The technology allows non-digital objects to be used as input
devices.

• In using cameras for input, the system does not rely on restrictive
properties required of conventional touch screen or touchpad
devices such as the capacitance, electrical resistance, or
temperature of the tool used .

• The computer's "vision" is created by a near-infrared, 850-

nanometer-wavelength LED light source aimed at the surface.

• When an object touches the tabletop, the light is reflected to

multiple infrared cameras with a net resolution of 1280 x 960,
allowing it to sense, and react to items touching the tabletop.

The Magic of Microsoft Surface
In photo studio

• Place the digital camera on the Microsoft

surface
• Photos are uploaded to the Microsoft
Surface automatically.
• We may preview them, delete unwanted
photos
• Select a theme/background for photo
• Select the size of the print
• Select the print option
• You may get your prints
Bill payment in hotels
• Just lay the credit cards on
the Microsoft Surface

• Drag the items from the bill to

the credit card.

• You may distribute different

items to different credit cards
and pay the bills as you want

• With this magic of Microsoft

Surface, you can pay bills
safely and securely.
Compares two mobile
phones
• Just place a mobile phone on the
Microsoft Surface

• The system identifies the same

(probably with a special barcode)
and displays the specifications and
prices.

• You place another mobile phone on

the Microsoft Surface. The
specifications for this are also
shown.

• When you slide the mobile phones

together, a comparison of both is
shown, to enable you to decide to
buy the one that suits you.
PROS
Large surface area to view different
windows and applications.

Data Manipulation - Selecting, moving,

rotating and resizing.

Quick and easy to use.

More Than One User –Several people can

orient themselves on different sides of the
surface to interact with an application
simultaneously (Max 52 points of touch).

Object Recognition - Increased functionality

aiding user in speed and ease of use

Time saving by eliminating many processes

CONS
Not portable and very expensive.
Privacy - Open for many to view.
Screen Visibility - Glare, finger
prints/dirt and human interaction
obscuring interface.
Poor Accuracy - Fat fingers are
not as accurate as a mouse or
stylus.
Fatigue - Reaching across the
table often can cause the arms to
ache.
Objects needs to be tagged
(domino tags or RFIDs).
FUTURE INNOVATIONS
Surface will continue to be sold to and used
by restaurants, retail, leisure and public
entertainment venues.

Computer scientists hope to incorporate

this kind of technology in peoples’ daily
lives… Future goals are to surround
people with intelligent surfaces (look up
recipes on your kitchen counter or table,
control TV with coffee table, etc.

Eventually every household may have one

in place of their everyday coffee table.

CONCLUSION
Microsoft Surface is the future of computers.

Fundamentally changes the way we interact with technology.

Surface takes existing technology and presents it in a new way. It isn't

simply a touch screen, but more of a touch-grab-move-slide-resize-and-
place-objects-on-top-of-screen, and this opens up new possibilities that
weren't there before.
So, its all about Milan, the table that knows what’s on it.

Hope you enjoyed the presentation!
