A slivers is a small or long and loose defect which is


dis-attached to the parent slab

SEM Analysis of the affected sample

Edge sliver defective sample are analysed under scanning electron microscope(SEM)
above elements found at surface and top of cross section of defected sample ,

Al and FeO were major element found form sem analysis
Observation-in Run back slab

Semi rolled slab 170mm thickness run back slab form the furnace after high pressure descaling
observed that the aluminium spray marking is not removed and marking remained even after
~21/2hrs of residence time in furnace at ~11000c and 170 mm reduction. 5
CAUSE AND EFFECT DIAGRAM

For finding out root cause of the edge slivers fish bone diagram has drawn. Main cause for edge
slivers is divided into five main sub causes as Man,Machine,Material,Method,Others

DATA ANAYLISIS ON THE ROOT CAUSE
PARETO CHART

After drawing Pareto chart, we came to know that there are 3 causes
contributing for the problem. In that aluminum spray marking is the major
contributing causes (80%)

RESULT AND DISCUSSION

Analysis of the data and trails showed that the defect is generating
from Aluminium marking on the slab.
Hence marking font size is reduced to 100 mm to 80 mm in these
grades.
Also marking machine pressure reduced
