Introduction

Active-Matrix OLED(Active Matrix Light Emitting diode or AMOLED) is a display

technology.
AMOLED is the type of OLED.
OLED describes specific type of thin display technology and Active Matrix refers to the
technology behind the addressing of pixels.
What is AMOLED?

AMOLED is a display technology used in some of the most popular mobile devices available
today, including various android handsets and tablets.
AMOLED is a new display technology that is rapidly becoming viable for many applications.
AMOLED is a self light emitting technology composed of a thin,multi_layered organic film
placed between an anode and cathode.
In contrast to LCD/TFT technology,AMOLED does not require a backlight.
HISTORY

The first EL from an organic molecule, anthracene, was reported by pope

and coworkers in1963.
The active matrix technology is invented by Bernard Lechner in1975
PRINCIPLE

Electroluminescence(EL) is an optical phenomenon and electrical phenomenon in which

materal emits light in response to an electric current passed through it, or to a strong electric
field.
AMOLED COMPONENTS

Emissive layer
Cathode
Conducting layer
Anode
Substrate
TFT
WORKING OF AMOLED

AMOLED basic structure consists of organic materials positioned between the cathode and
anode which is composed of electric conductive transparent indium Tin Oxide(ITO). The
organic materials compose a multi layered thin film which includes the
Hole Transporting layer(HTL),Emission Layer(EL) and the Electron Transporting
Layer(ETL). By applying the appropriate electric voltage holes and electrons are injected into
the EML fro, the anode and the cathode
respectviely
MANUFACTURING OF AMOLED

The biggest part of manufacturing AMOLED is applying the organic layers to the substrate. This
can be done in three ways:
1)vacuum deposition or vacuum thermal evaporation (VTE)
2)organic vapour phase deposition(OVPD)
3)inkjet printing
COMPARISION TO OTHER TECHNOLOGIES

AMOLEDs provide high refresh rates than their OLED counterparts hence we reduce power
consumption than the OLED.
It displays wider range than the LCD and OLED.
AMOLED also provides better viewing angles than LCD. Whites on LCD are better than
AMOLED while blacks are better on AMOLED
AMOLED has less complexity so is much thinner.
