Lesson 1: Illustrating Secants, Tangents, Segments, and

Sectors of a Circle

Secant is a line that intersects Tangent is a line that is

the circle at two points. coplanar with the circle and
intersects the circle at exactly
A one point.

Secant Line

In the figure above, ശሬሬሬԦ

𝑃𝑇 is a
Tangent Line and 𝑂 is the
point of tangency

Point of tangency is the point

of intersection between a
circle and the line tangent to
the circle.

Sector of a circle is the region bounded by an arc of the circle and the
two radii to the end points of arc.

Segment of a circle is the region bounded by an arc and the segment

joining its endpoints.
Arc length is the length of the arc which can be determined by using
𝐴 𝑙
the proportion = 2𝜋𝑟 , where 𝑨 is the degree measure of arc, 𝒓 is the
360
radius of the circle and 𝒍 is the arc length.

Lesson 2: Theorems on Secants, Tangents, and

Segments

Radius-Tangent Theorem.

Theorem: If a line is tangent to a circle, then it is perpendicular to the radius at

the point of tangency.

B 𝑡
A

Two Tangents Theorem.

Theorem: If two tangent segments are drawn from the same external point,
then the segments are equal.

2
Secant-Secant Power Theorem

Theorem: If two secants intersect in the exterior of a circle, then the product
of the lengths of one secant segment and its external part is equal to the
product of the lengths of the other secant segment and its external part.

Chord-Chord Power Theorem

Theorem: If two chords intersect in the interior of the circle, then the product
of the lengths of the segments of one chord equals the product of the
lengths of the segments of the other chord.

Secant-Tangent Power Theorem

Theorem: If a tangent and a secant segment intersect in the exterior of a circle,

then the square of the length of the tangent segment is equal to the product of the
lengths of the entire secant segment and its external part
