POST-LAB ASSIGNMENT (5PTS) LAB 8

Directions: Please answer the follow questions, and type your answers. Staple this to the lab exercise for
the lab, and hand it in at the beginning of your next lab meeting.

1. Was the percent difference between the two values of the moment of inertia reasonable (that
is to say ~10%)? What aspects of the experiment contributed most significantly to the
uncertainty in the measured moment of inertia, and explain how these would affect your
results?

2. If the mass of the disk was tripled, how would this impact the magnitude of the angular
acceleration? (Assume that the tension in the string remains constant)

3. There were multiple spool radii that you could have wrapped the string around. Suppose you
had chosen to wrap the string around the spool with a radius of 1.25cm instead of 2.5cm. What
would be the new angular acceleration of the disk? (Assume that the tension in the string
remains constant)

4. Look back to the warm up question. Rank in order from largest to smallest the angular
accelerations of systems a-d. Note: the moment of inertia for a point mass rotating at a distance
r is I = mr2.
