1. Introduction
This instrument indicates the angle as well as the direction of rudder of ship by means of
pointing needle and calibrated dial installed in the wheelhouse or elsewhere, which is a
important instrument for ttie operation of ships.
The mechanical position is converted to the electrical signal by means of synchro-motor
in order to operate the indicator.
6
The indicator has dial calibrated in integer number times of actual rudder angle, thus the
angle on the dial. A pointing needle indicates the rudder angle and its direction on the o!)

dial. A transmitter is mechanically connected to the tiller. The transmitter and the
indicator installed elsewhere are connected by means of electric wires, and the angle of
rudder is transmitted to the indicator without and a moment of delay.
Each parts are specially selected for use on board ship and is made according to JIS
specifications, the performance of which is excellent.

3. Principle of operation
The both transmitter and indicator are based upon the theory of synchro-motor, the
principle of which is explained b.elow.

The synchro-motor is consists of primary and secondary windings, which are the rotor as
well as stator coils. The terminals of transmitter are connected to that of indicator
correspondingly. The primary coil is connected to the power source (R 1and R2) and (S_
forms predetermined magnetic fields. The secondary winding of the transmitter is
'll

connected to the corresponding coil of indicator for each phase (S 1, S2, and S3).

When the relative position of primary and secondary coils is the same as in the indicator,
the voltage induced in the secondary coils in the transmitter and the indicator are same
and there is no current flow.

When the shaft of the indicator is Transmitter Indicator

locked and the shaft of the transmitter
is rotated 30°, there will be unbalance - 0.2A

as shown by the sketch in the right.

In such case, current flows in all the
coils of stator, and most current flows
in the part where there is most sa s1
-0.55A
unbalanced 0.75·A-

voltage. When two shafts are in different position.

The electromagnetic force resulting from the current in the stator coil causes the rotor to
have a torque to rotate the shaft of the indicator to the same position as that of the c»
transmitter. If the shift of the indicator is free, the shaft is rotated 30°.
"

Thus the synchro follows, and from theoretical point of view there should be no difference
in the angle indication between the transmitter and indicator, but because of some friction
in the moving parts and accuracy of machining etc., there is some error.
This error is the accuracy (error in the indication.)

4.2.8. Electro-Luminescence plate
Electro-Luminescence (EL) is the light source that shines in all surfaces.
EL plate is different from the electric light bulb which has heated filament, or electric
discharge of a certain type of gas. The phenomenon. is called light emission. This EL
plate is fitted under the plastic dial to illuminate the dial. In the case of electric light
bulb, such mechanical trouble is eliminated.
However, the EL plate is deteriorated by moisture, and it is sealed in plastic to prev:ent •
it from moisture. The EL plate can be used semi-permanently unless it is scratched on~

the surface or lead wire pulled off.

4.3. Dimmers
There are three types of surface type, flush type and panel flush type, made of
aluminum alloy casting. Rheostat and terminal boards are fitted inside of surface type
and flush type. For panel flush type, the rheostat and terminal board is omitted.
The light can be controlled from outside of Bakelite molded star shaped knob.
When the knob is turned toward clockwise, the light is intensified, and when turned
toward anti clockwise, the light is darkened.
When turned to extreme anti clockwise, the light is cut off.

4.4. Connection box

Used for connecting the transmitter and indicator. The size of box changes according
to the number of indicator to be used. The material is aluminum alloy casting, and
cable is connected through gland nut. This item is to be installed when specified.

4.5. Spare parts
