What do you already know?

Task 1: Illustration of your imagination!

Direction: Do this in your activity notebook/Bond Paper. Discuss/show to your class.

1. In your thought, how can you imagine what could be a robot looks like? Draw the
image of that robot that you had imagined in your activity notebook.
2. In what you have illustrated, list down all the task(s) that your robot is capable of
doing.

What to know.

A robot is “a mechanical device that is capable of performing a variety of tasks on

command or according to instructions programmed in advance”. To be a robot, a device
must not look like a human form. According to WhatIs.com, robots that resemble humans
are known as humanoids/androids; however, many robots aren't built on the human model.
Industrial robots, for example, are often designed to perform repetitive tasks that aren't
facilitated by a human-like construction. A robot can be remotely controlled by a human
operator, sometimes from a great distance. A telechir is a complex robot that is remotely
controlled by a human operator for a telepresence system, which gives that individual the
sense of being on location in a remote, dangerous or alien environment and the ability to
interact with it. Telepresence robots, which simulate the experience and some of the
capabilities of being physically present, can enable remote business consultations,
healthcare, home monitoring, and childcare, among many other possibilities.

Task 2: Question ¿
Direction: Write your answer in your activity notebook.

Does your created robot fit the criteria of a robot? How does your created robot compare to
the definition of a robot?

Task 3: Guide Questions ¿

Direction: After watching all the videos answer the following questions. Write your answer
in your activity notebook.

Watch the videos listed in the Multimedia resources:

A. FIRST® Lego League Competition
B. Engineering for the Red Planet QuickTime Video.

Guide ?:

1. What do the videos talk about?

Task 4: Observation:
Direction: Visit the site of Mars Rover that is included in the Multimedia Resources. Answer
the question in your activity notebook.

⮚ List down the different parts of the Mars rover and the different types of tasks it is
capable of performing.

Activity:

Task 5: Students Investigation/Research

Direction: Write your answer in the word document.

Instruction: List down 10 robotics technology that you can see/identify in your home town.
Give a short description and uses of that robotic technology that you have listed.

Additional Information:
Robotics Engineers:

What is a robotic engineer? According to CareerExploer.com “A robotic engineer is a

behind-the-scenes designer, who is responsible for creating robots and robotic systems that
can perform duties that humans are either unable or prefer not to complete”. This robotics
engineer is creating a technology to help people to make jobs safer, easier, and more
efficient, particularly in the manufacturing industry. But not only in the industry also robotics
technology uses in our household.

Where do they get the idea of building a different kind of robot? Engineers will
research how people have solved problems similar to the one that they want their design to
address. Expanding on someone's idea is often how advancement in technology are made.
Sometimes engineers get their idea on nature itself. Please watch this following videos for

Task 6: Checking for Understanding:

Direction: Answer the following question. Write your answer on your activity notebook.

1. What is robotics?
2. Does it have to look like a human? Why?
3. Why do engineers design and build a robot?
4. Where do ideas for how robots work come from?
5. Can you think of a situation in which a robot would be necessary or at least helpful?
6. What specific characteristics would designers need to include in such a robot?
