Annual Capacity Test of GMDSS Radio Batteries PDF
25‐Sept‐2015
Report of Capacity test carried out for GMDSS Radio batteries.
Details of Batteries: 2 x 12V (in Series), 200 AH, Manuf: Nordstrom NP200‐12, Fitted on 1‐July‐2013
Procedure: Batteries were fully charged, as seen by its trickle charging voltage of 27.6V on Radio
console.
Batteries were disconnected from radio console, and by using one 24V, 250W Halogen lamp (RS part
no. 250‐075) they were discharged at an average current of 12.1 Amp.
0‐30V data logger was connected to battery terminals to record the fall in voltage. During test,
battery voltage and load current were regularly monitored using multimeter and clamp meter.
Lowest voltage that can be tolerated: 24V – 10% = 21.6V
Basic Principle of Capacity test: For a 200 AH battery, when discharged @ 12.1 Amp, must be able to
sustain its load for; 200 AH divide by 12.1 Amp = 16.5 hours.
If during the test the terminal voltage of battery does not fall below 21.6V for the period of 16.5
hours, then the Batteries are 100% efficient, or else the Batteries efficiency is calculated likewise.
Test commenced: 24‐Sept‐2015, 11:15 hrs; Test ended: 25‐Sept‐2015, 3:45 hrs, Total hours = 16.5
Result: It was found that the above said GMDSS Radio batteries are 100% efficient and in good
condition, as the batteries were able to sustain the above said load for the above said period, and
batteries terminal voltage just before the end of test period was 22.48V
Battery voltage recorded by 0‐30V Data logger during above test period is enclosed herewith.
