English Language Arts and Reading 4-12

Follow these Eazy-Steps strategies to help you better comprehend non-fiction selections in any type of assignment or test.

BEFORE

1. Identify the non-fiction selections: science/history/sports articles, persuasive text, letters to

editors, etc. (look through the testing booklet when applicable).
2. Label: write NON-FICTION by the title.
3. Read the TITLE carefully; it is directly connected to the main idea of the non-fiction selection.
4. Highlight or underline the FIRST and LAST sentences in each paragraph.
The title key words (or related words) appear in these sentences, supporting the main idea of the
selection. Circle or underline them.

the content. The introduction and the conclusion give you the heart of the selection.

WHILE

6. Read the non-fiction selection carefully.

7. While reading, mark main ideas on the margin or/and highlight details inside the paragraphs.

AFTER

8. Use the title to write a one-sentence summary of the whole article. Use the title key words in it.
9. Highlight key words in questions as you read and answer them.
10. Show context clues in the selection to support the correct answer.
