What Can YOU Do with the Can-Do Descriptors?

What Are the Can-Do Descriptors?

The Can Do descriptors give us insight into what our
ELLs can do in the four language domains (listening,
speaking, reading, and writing) according to their
English proficiency level.

Why Are They Important?

Provide equitable educational opportunities for
your students.
Allow you to meet your students at their current
level of language proficiency.
Bridges the gap between the language and the
content.

How can we scaffold their writing?

Allow students to respond orally to questions using one word or short phrases.
As students are responding, write down their answer. Then, students can copy
their answer from your written model.
Provide students with a word bank of possible answers for the question. Make
sure you model how to use a word bank and introduce the words that are
present. To increase comprehension of the words, you can include visuals!
Create a personal visual dictionary for students to reference during writing
activities. It is important to introduce the words on the folder and how to
effectively use it.
Allow students to respond using drawings. For those who are capable, push
them to include labels to match their illustrations.
