The key takeaways are that mobile network installations need to support multiple radio technologies simultaneously while minimizing costs related to installation time, equipment space, and cable management. Remote radio units require both power and fiber connections.

Considerations for mobile site installations include supporting multiple radio technologies, minimizing discrete power and fiber runs to reduce costs, addressing higher power needs of 5G, environmental concerns, and cable management in shelters.

Considerations for small cell installations include using mmWave spectrum for limited coverage areas, needing many installations on street furniture to increase coverage, potential visual impacts of multiple units, aesthetic requirements, and installation costs related to machinery and traffic control.

Considerations of Mobile Sites Installation

• In 5G era, multiple radio technologies are to be deployed in the mobile network to provide sophisticated services. 3G, 4G and 5G may be co-
existing in the network, which means multiple radio units will be co-located on the same site for a period of time.

• Remote radio units will be commonly deployed in the mobile network which requires the fibres (providing front haul connections, CPRI or
eCPRI) and power (-48V, 15 to 30A) to the tower head in lieu of RF coaxial feeders.

• Multiple discrete power and fibre runs will increase the installation time on the tower which means more cost on labour, machinery and
sometimes traffic control.

• Discrete power and fibre runs could increase the usage of cable trays and tower loading consumption. It could increase the rental cost if it
related to the quantity of units to be installed.

• The power rating of the 5G RRU is generally higher than the older ones which requires to consider the voltage drop over a certain length.

• Environmental concerns need to be addressed e.g. smaller size cables could be damaged by bird chewing.

• Cable management in the shelter should be considered to minimise the space consumption

Considerations of Small Cells Installation

• To densify the capacity in metro area, mobile operators are considering deploying small size AAUs with mmWave spectrum (e.g. 26 GHz in
Australia).

• The coverage of mmWave radio is very limited (~100m to 150m) due to the nature of the radio propagation.

• Significant amount of small cells sites need to be installed on the street furniture e.g. light poles, utility poles, bus stops etc. to increase the
coverage and capacity.

• Multiple units of equipment need to be installed on the street furniture which may cause visual impact.

• Municipal administration generally require the small cells installation to be aesthetic and small to reduce the visual impact. Sometimes
cabling system needs to be installed within the pole.

• Small cells installation needs machinery to assist working at height. They normally locate in the high traffic areas where require traffic control.
These cost is highly related to the installation time. Plug and play will be the idea installation method.

• Traditional fronthaul network will consume huge amount of dark fibre, basically one fibre for each AAU connected back to the BBUs location.

Fronthaul Transmission for Small Cells

In 5G small cells network, huge amount of fibre connections will be required

due to the high speed fronthaul requirement between the BBUs and AAUs.

BBU Hotel (BBH) normally locates in a central room to serve multiple small cells
nearby in star topology. Two main fronthaul transmission topologies are
commonly used in the small cells deployment.

• Multiple dark fibre direct connect between BBUs and AAUs - easily
exhausting dark fibre in the area
• Passive DWDM modules multiplex/demultiplex optical signals via
single/dual fibre – significantly save fibre resource

QUICKDR@W® Lead-in Assembly (LIA)

The QUICKDR@W® Lead-in Assembly (LIA) is a pre-connectorised cable

supplied on a cardboard reel inside a cardboard box. It provides the means of
Plug & Play connecting the small cells to the network.

• The assembly can be supplied with SC simplex or LC duplex LC connectors at each

end for fibre applications.
• The assembly comprises of a Pulling Shroud, Lead-in Seal and outdoor rated 1f or 2f
cable for rapid installation of the customer connection.
• Tough high impact ABS shroud protects the fibre and connector from the ingress of
water and dust to IP67.
• The Pulling Shroud is used to feed a cable through a length of duct. During this
operation a swivel should be used between the LIA and the pulling rope.
• The shroud protects the fibre and connector during installation and provides easy
assembly and quick access to the connector after the installation. The unit is easy to
take apart.
• The Lead-in Seal is used to connect the LIA to the CLJ. A transport sleeve is used to
protect the connector before installation into the CLJ.
• Flexible rubber boot limits the bend on the cable during installation, protecting the
fibre and preventing fibre breakage.

Information to be aquired from the customers

Marco sites:
• Hybrid solution or fibre only solution? This is the consideration of the costs about installation, tower rental etc.
• Fibre count for each cable? This is the consideration of the total quantity of Radios (include future and backup for maintenance)
• If hybrid cable is required, what is the power rating and minimum voltage input of the radios? This will determine the voltage drop allowance
and the size of the power cores.
• Size requirement of the trunk cable? Need compatible with existing installation accessories?
• What is the fibre connection requirement of the radio? One or two CPRI per radio? Simplex or duplex? Hardened connectors?
• What is the power connection requirement of the radio? Hardened connectors?
• Rodent proofing, monkey proofing?

Small Cells:
• How many radio units each small cell?
• Size limit for the connectivity
• Point of splicing? Close to the pole?
• Installation cost limitations – night time? Machinery requirement? Land closure? Traffic control?
• Demarcation required? Some carriers require a demarcation point for fibre team and mobile team.
• Fronthaul topology – some carriers consider centralise the Baseband so passive DWDM solution may be required.
